I too have been looking to get a basic computer to start off with. I was looking at the zoop but am now probably getting something more advanced (Vyper air vs DG03). I understand that they offer more features that you need. I suggest you go with the inbetween model of the vytec or newer vyper if you are worried about warranty. Your LDS may pricematch online stores like Leisurepro which has the Vyper for $325. They also have the zoop for $250. So check price matching anyways if you decide against the used vytec.

If you like the feature previously mentioned about uploading your dive and looking at your profile etc., consider that the zoop only samples rates of 30 seconds. A vyper has sampling rates of 10,20,30 and 60. I'm not sure what the vytec has but it will be closer to the vyper.

Go with the vytec. It will have a backlight to see it in poor/dark conditions in case you lose or forget your light(if u have one), better sampling rates, room to grow just in case, AI if you decide to treat yourself in the future.

Have the guy take a picture of the dive log if you aren't sure about how many dives are on it. The dive log should hold the records of dives even after battery replacement. If it says 1 or 2, then you know that granny was diving. If it says 84, then the guy might be selling you a line and go the other way.

He says it has 2 dives in it; I don't think he's lying since he's offered to send it to me to try it before I pay.

I asked if he could dive with it just to make it is still working after 2 years of no use, but he can't dive due to an accident/injury (he posted on the forum months ago about that- so if it isn't true, it is a pretty good set up, since I haven't even been a member that long.)

Good to know about the 30 sec. sampling on the zoop. I don't think that would be as fun to play with and analyze, even though it will probably be a bit before I can get the AI if I go with the vytec.

The Vytec is fairly old in the Suunto line up. The Vytec DS came afterwards. But it has been replace by the Vyper Air. Both the Vytec and Vytec DS have AI and are fine computers. I dove the DS for a while and liked it for the diving I did at the time. To be honest if I was starting over I am not sure which I would do. AI is nice but there is something to be said about having a warranty. If the Vytec was a DS with transmitter/cable I probably go that route as buying ala-carte is going to up the price.

For me, anything that can be dived is worth diving. I'm kind of a freak though.... :)

I enjoy spending the day out on Lake Travis and manage to get about 120+ local dives per year in.

Wow, that's a lot of dives on your lake. How does that work out preparing you for diving other sites? Hard to tell your experience since you do not log your dives, why? Do you have much experience outside of Lake Travis? I would imagine that ocean conditions, like current, may be quite different.

Thanks, Craig

You do know that the Transmitter is $425 list right?

Yep. Which is why I won't be getting one for awhile, if I go with the compatible one.

Still, they Vytec without transmitter costs a lot more than what I'll be paying for it.

However, the warranty worries me. I don't think it matters if the computer is too much for me, but I'm just torn...

Given for you there is no clear winner and you are equally interested in both, toss a coin and be done with it, you won't go wrong with either.

When in a similar situation, I use a 2 part coin toss system. I toss the coin, but the true purpose of the coin toss is to discern my innermost feelings. If I feel satisfied with the way it turned out, then I go with the results. If instead I feel really disappointed with the way the coin toss went, then I know I secretly wanted the other, and I go with the other.
