The last time I left CZM I was amazed and amused at what I saw at the airport. Two young people with a small baby must have bought up half the trinkets in CZM. They had 4 very large bags, 3 of which when put on the scale were all way over the 50 pound weight limit.

The counter person let them pull their bags and rearrange them. As everyone in the checkin line watched they moved their bags to the side and opened them up spreading the contents all over the floor. The fellow was carrying his personal item (a very large backpack) which he also laid on the floor. As we all watched they pulled a ton of items out of their overweight checked bags and stuffed it all in the backpack.. using as much force as they could muster to get it all in and then zipped closed. By the time they were done the backpack alone had to weigh 50 pounds or more.

They then fastened up their 3 large suitcases and reweighed them at the same checkin scale. They managed to get all three bags down to under 50 pounds each but it was then all being carried on the plane in the backpack.

I just watched and shook my head wondering what in the world had just been accomplished by the slight of hand that I just saw take place. The couple left CZM with the same amount of weight and the airline had accomplished absolutely nothing while still carrying the same amount of weight.

The irony in the result of the exercise still amuses me, go figure..:dontknow:
Hey welcome to my world. I go thru this every single year going to the Philippines. Every filipino that goes "home" has to bring the max + weight and at the airport there are several people doing the open and shift dance, my wife and family included.

Did I tell you about my golf game?

I really don't appreciate somebody telling me I am not a good visitor to Cozumel because I prefer not to use the union van service at the airport.Even in the states it is my choice if I use a gypsy cab or yellow cab.I work hard for my money and quite honestly it is up to me how I spent it on vacation.
When in Coz I only stay in smaller local hotels usually Bello caribe on Pedro Coldwell and shop and eat only at local establishments.I always rent a car or scooter from ISIS.I go out of my my to stay away from tourists except to dive and enjoy the local culture and customs of any country I am visiting.I can only say I don't like strong Unions that try to overcharge tourists and like the free enterprise system.I am only trying to give people a choice of transportation and then they have the freedom to decide what they want to do for themselves. As far as luggage goes,I was an army ranger and try to travel as light and fast as I can go.I love the people of Coz,but don't like the Taxi Mafia.

One of the non-financial reasons for this limit is to prevent the baggage handlers from getting injured trying to lift some idiot's 150 pound stuffed-to-the-gills suitcase in and out of the airplane regularly.

Agreed, anyone who stays on the Island is supporting the local ecomony. If you wish to give your money to a cab driver rather than the shuttle company then thats your choice. It doesn't make you a cheap tourist. The fact that you choose to spend your vacation money in Cozumel rather than some other Island makes you a good tourist for Cozumel.

Yeah, and that applies to the 70# limit too.

The over 50# charge is only for revenue tho.

To each his own. I don't appreciate the implication that I am allowing myself to be victimized or financing organized crime by taking the shuttle and using taxis. That wouldn't be being a "good visitor", either. For the record, I don't have a problem with you getting around Cozumel any way you want to.

I am curious, though, what the Cozumel taxi drivers have ever done to you or how you justify referring to them as "mafia". Have they rubbed anyone out lately? ;^)

I am located here in South Philadelphia and we refer to individuals or unions that use strong arm techniques as mafia. Not actually criminal but protected by politics and bribes. They do not allow taxis to pick up outside the airport for one thing, how can that be allowed?Years ago they gave a dive operator friend a really bad time because he was picking up divers in town and driving us to the caleta.ever wonder why there are no buses or shuttle services from the larger hotels, the unions won't permit it to happen. If you don't know better the drivers will charge you $6.00 for a $3.00 fare. Also jump in a cab and tell him you only have a $20 dollar bill, sorry senor no change. Why should a person have to pay$6 dollars from the airport van when I can leave the airport and get there for $2.50.As I stated before I only stated what I do when I go to coz.I have no trouble with what anyone else does on their vacation,I only hope everyone has a happy and safe vacation.

Do you feel the same way about vendors in sports venues who won't let you bring in your own beer? ;^) They way I see it, it's their country and their rules. It's not for me to tell them how to run things. As to the "no change" scam, it's easily gotten around and it's individuals that do it, not the union. There are scam artists everywhere; I daresay that there in Philly where you live there are cabbies that will take a rube on a roundabout to hike up the fare.

The rule about taxis not picking up at the airport is a good one, IMO. Last time I arrived in CZM, three planes hit the tarmac at once. Trying to get all those people into cabs in that tiny parking lot would have been bedlam. But hike to the street if you want. I'd not try and convince others to do it, though. If everyone does it, you'll be two hours trying to get a cab out there. Be careful what you wish for. :D

Gordon, lets put this to rest.We could argue all day and night about this.I wish no one any harm.I have no problem with you taking taxi's.I have only stated what I do and will continue to do.I either rent a car or scooter or often will just walk when in town.I have no problem walking from town out to scuba mau in the morning and back after diving. It gives me a chance to sightsee and meet new people.I will continue not to use the taxi service and that is my right.May you and others continue to happily use whatever transportation you desire when in Cozumel.Newt Jones
