Local politics are always interesting. Telling someone they are bad tourist for choosing a taxi over a van from the airport is mildly rude.

Wow. You really feel the need to correct everyone and teach us how to be good tourists according to you? Nice!

By way of "correcting", I merely described the real "Taxi Mafia".

Any visitor to Coz is good for the island and I'm happy to see those that do come.

But, as I have learned from living here, it's best to go with the system rather than to work around it -- on the whole, it's not so terrible and some things work really, really well. And even though some things may work differently than I expect them to or are not always to my way of thinking, there are reasons that they are the way they are.

There's a lot of "foreign" here and all I'm doing is reminding readers of the "When in Rome.." thing.

DDeb is very helpful and insightful around here generally. I may not always agree with her, but I generally appreciate her local views. I didn't take her statement as antagonistic, but I suppose it may be possible to see it that way.

And I do wish the taxi union was not as powerful there, but they're just a minor annoyance to me generally. I've argued with some, enjoyed some, bargained successfully with a few.

I almost purchased a house in Coz 12 years ago. After doing much research I decided it probably really wasn't the paradise I had imagined.I decided it would be better to visit Coz often and also be able to travel to other locations. The when in rome phrase is offbase,When I travel in asia prostitution is legal should I therefore use prostitutes.I have to tell my wife I am a bad visitor because I don't use prosititutes while on vacation.
That is a crazy analogy but it is up to the individual to simply decide how he wants to get to the hotel.Personal freedom and choice, not yours.I will state for the last time I don't care if people use the vans or not it is simply my right to state what I prefer to do on my visits without recourse.

 Let us know how that works out...

When I traveled around Ireland, I certainly drove on the left like everyone else. The rental car company got a laugh from the hand made stickers I had on the speedometer and on either side of me high on the windshield: Stay Left! I tried to accept their mustard on ham sandwiches but failed - much too hot, but loved their beers. The were afraid of my hat tho. The Dallas show was popular.

Agreed that njones has a right to his opinion. Now can we find common ground in Tequila?
The Irish pubs closed at 9 I think but there were the after hours bars. I walked into one wearing my hat and boots one night in Cork and the doorman waived the admission charge because I was in costume. It was cowboys & indians night. Hehe, I failed to drive on the left sometimes late at night.
