No one asked me to pay the Visitax on my recent arrival and departure from Cancun.

Just an update on Visitax. Arrived in Cancun Feb. 22 and saw nothing about the Visitax - worst thing on arrival was the 50 minute wait for luggage to start coming out on the carousel. Left on March 8 and saw nothing or no-one in regards to Visitax. Actually, checking in and going through security was very lax IMO. From the time we left our resort - 30 minutes from airport - we arrived, checked in, went through security, and were in the departure area in 1 hour. As recommended, we did get to the airport 3 hours early.

* I was "forced" to purchase the Visitax ($13.76 each) by my wife before we left because our traveling friends did. :shakehead:
When we approached security in the Cancun airport there were people politely standing to one side with signs trying to sell the Visitax.

I have a feeling that little of that cash collected at the kiosk finds it's way to the government.
My first visit to Cancun was in 1989. On exit, at the airport everyone was forced to a pay $25 USD federal exit tax (cash USD only, no tracable credit cards or peso's allowed). As I understand it the money simply 'disappeared'. Later they got the airlines to be the bagman for the federal goverment and collect the tax thru the ticket price. The Visitax is a local scheme and as I understand it the airlines refused to collect it for them.

Ah, yes, the "exit tax"; I remember it as well. If I don't pay it I have to stay on Cozumel? Horrors! :D
