Yeah, I don't know if it's the same woman every time or if it's a role that they pass around, but when she snared my mom on her... I don't know, 40th or so Cozumel trip a couple of years ago, I came to my mom's rescue and then stood back and watched her work for a bit. She is very smooth.

Your observation is so right on....amazing huh ???? Oh well, we make it work and as long as we get on our shuttle and on our way all is good. Although, If we can help a newbie along the way however, it makes it all that much better !

48 pound lif BC, 3 regs, 19 cf pony, a few cameras, strobe, usual dive equipment, spare parts, clean T-shirt/day and other clothes, laptop, etc. - it all adds up: 2 - 50# checked, 1 - 40# roll-on, backpack. Hey I stopped taking my own coffee maker, but I don't know what else to leave home...?

I stopped using a couple of my favorite pieces of luggage because they weighed too much empty.

Also Don, Honestly....175#, really no kidding..???? ..Of course if that is what you pack and you are happy, it is truly wonderful.. But when I think about the fact that Michael and I travel with full dive gear...soup to nuts including our personal clothing and needs,with carry on only..I can only think that...Wow...that's heavy man !!! Overall, whatever works is great...as long as we are diving right ??? !!!

Here is where I would start: ditch the pony (and its reg) and just pay more attention to your gas usage. The DM will have loads of extra gas if you need to breathe off his alternate. Ditch the spare parts. Cozumel Scuba Repair is excellent and can do same day service plus they are stupid cheap (last time I was in they didn't even charge me). In fact, on that basis, you coupld probably ditch another reg. They make travel BCs these days that are quite light...might be a new toy to buy. Glad you've ditched the coffee maker.

Or, you could do as I did and just buy a home to store all your dive stuff for here.

Don - you are supposed to empty the 48 pounds of water from the BCD before you pack it.

New toy to buy? All my diving is travel. I'm 6 ft x 200+ and my home bud is taller & hefty as well. He rented a little BC from Casa del Mar his first trip. With the weight it took to sink him as a newbie, he almost drowned on the surface. He spit his reg out on the surface, gasping, me hollaring to put his reg back in his mouth - and if I got to 3 times I was going to yank his weights. He bought a BC like mine as soon as he got home. Sure some of that can be offset with skill, but we do live in the middle of the contiguous 48, he makes 1 trip a year, me 2 now, and we don't do much more. I like us both having plenty of lift.

Ditch my safety gear? Never. You divers who want to rely on DMs for backup, fine, but that will never be enough for me, and - my home bud is not dependable.

But then I guess most of y'all are still breathing tank air on hope & trust too. Anyone else here test their tanks for CO? Our last test at Coz showed 17 ppm - about twice the max allowed for surface air by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers.

I have never ever needed the DM's gas for backup since my gas usage is pretty darn good. I'm usually last out of the water with the DM. Since I don't have a regular (or even irregular) dive buddy, consider him my buddy. To each his own though. If you want to haul 175# around, knock yourself out!

Dive Equipment stored in my handy dandy McGyver Backpack:
Standard SS Halcyon Backplate, 30 # wing Eclipse Buoyancy Compensator and tank adapter, Scubapro Split fins, 1 reg, mask, dive computer, compass, 3 mm wetsuit, hood, full booties, surface marker, reel, compact snorkel, misc. stuff like whistle, mirror, slate, my small casio camera and housing.

Personal: 2 bathing suits, Change of clothing plus 2 additional tops and 1 sleepwear. This all comes to 40 # and meets the carry on size requirements.

Then in personal bag: Husbands computer (He works on vacation ), passport,4 c flashlight and my Iphone.

Michael's McGyver Backpack contains the same as mine however he has an Aluminum backplate, no camera , but, he does add his 4 c flashlight. In his personal he carries his camera equipment. All of this works for us for 1 -2 weeks. We do send our clothing to the laundry every 3rd day and I do some personal handwashing :chuckle:, but it really is all we need.
