One data point, which may help people determine risk levels of doing solo searches:

A former instructor of ours (and former friend of mine) was leading a group of divers (some reports say group of students) - he came up, his students/divers didnt. So he went back down to look for them. Students came up, he didn't. His body still has not been found.

Scuba:
But I think some believe the pony is a crutch that gives you a sense of security in the event of gas system failure, a security which you may extrapolate into taking other risks dissociated from the benefits of gas system redundancy for which you may not be adequately prepared for.
In Don's case (in this thread), he was using his pony bottle, like a stage and not like a traditional pony bottle. So, In this case it was not a crutch, it was used appropriately.

Donny, lets be careful out there. I can't keep an eye on everyone!!

I prefer the two hands on the butt vault over and land in the saddle method, lone ranger style. English PhhhhTTTT.... Iffin it aint got a horn it aint a saddle.
Sorry, thread hijack attempt. Back to the beating a dead horse debate.

Much like the ten foot high giant stride my DM inst insisted I try.

Snowbear:
p.s. The hands on the butt and vaulting works great as long as the horse cooperates.
If he doesn't..... OWIE :11:  :11:

OWIE is right! I had one buck as I was in mid-vault, her butt hit mine and launched me off to one side.

I agree about english... but that was the only link I found on a quick search that had pictures :D

Yeah, that was a problem.

I did find this "western" :fork: reference, possibly having a great influence on some of our older members:

Roy Rogers and TRIGGER were favorites of the early TV age. Rogers began featuring the wonder horse during his years in the movies, and took Trigger along for the ride when Rogers and his wife Dale Evans began their own successful TV show in the 1950s. (Evans had her own famous horse, Buttermilk.) When Trigger died in 1965, Rogers had the horse mounted rather than buried, and Trigger can still be seen on display in the Roy Rogers -Dale Evans museum in Victorville, California

Although Roy also mounted "Buttermilk" (The museum never uses the word "stuffed"), I have no clue as to Roy or Dale's final disposition.
