Rick Inman:
So, as my good deed for the day, I will allow you to safely dispose of your diving death-trap by sending it to me at once, where I can put it to proper use. :D

Hey Rick, you need to work on your good deed wording..."where I can put it to proper use" just doesn't sound right when you're talking about something that could destroy diving as we know it and possibly go on to destroy all of mankind. Next time try something like "where it can be disposed of by a properly trained professional" ;)

I definitely got a chuckle out of the story, I don't care if it's true or just a great work of fiction :D

I don't care if it's real or not--it made me laugh. :)

Thinking back on my first post-certification dive trip, I don't find this story far-fetched at all. It's amazing that more new divers don't end up hurt or dead.

Don't worry about the silly boat Captain...just go diving...you run into stupid people everyday...

I agree. We were on a dive boat with one woman who believed there was more air in a nitrox tank than a regular scuba tank. There was no way of convincing her otherwise. So I think I'll have regular coffee from now on and not decaf, that way I'll get more coffee, right?;)

I bought a tank online, then called a local LDS about having the valve installed. The conversation started with him saying "take it to another shop, you don't know much about tanks". After I read him every label on the tank, he agreed (very reluctantly) that a new tank that was hydro'ed and inspected at the factory in 2/06 and never used would PROBABLY not have any internal damage that would show up in a visual. I wish he would've just said "Since you bought it online and I didn't make any money, I'm going to charge you for a visual." I can respect honesty...

i've had the above situation AND the comments on my setup both. I am SSI cert and SSI sets up the rig with two hoses on each side instead of PADI with 3 and 1. i know PADI is the biggest out there, but SSI is not "unknown," and i've had dive ops tell me my rig is set up wrong.

and with all the money i've given my LDS, you'd think they'd allow me to purchase my tank online. after all, they dont OFFER a metallic purple tank anyway :D

to sum all of it up, i guess what i'm saying is, i'm pretty passive and i typically dont get right back into whoever's face it is that's calling me out over my rig, my diving or my purchases.. however, i'm aggressive at finding a new place to dive and a new place to spend my diving money so let them act how they want and i'll go elsewhere.

by the way - my very first souvenier dive t-shirt from AAA Diving in Hawaii "SCUBA FOR FREE - PAY FOR THE ABUSE!" (thanks Alex!)

Well I don't want to go on the defensive but if you don't believe me, I'll scan you my padi OW cert card AND my govt issued cert card. Both from august last year.
Pics from my LDS who doesnt stock anything DIN and stainless bolt snaps
I'll send you pics of my BP/W rigs.
And pics of the dive site in st-paul

And I can even send scanned pics of the ad for the chartered dive with info on st-paul.

Incredible. The boat captain was so imbecile that now people can't believe someone said that. That's kinda recomforting for me...

Well, let’s see First Post+unbelievable story=Troll
that’s the basic formula from my experience

If your not a troll then welcome my friend to the SCUBABoard and accept my apologies.

It’s an unbelievable situation. What kind of outfit are they? Did you say?

wardric:
There are no french canadian trolls so it must be true ;):D

seriously, all the location names he mentionned do exist so It looks genuine, though hard to believe I concur... :sigh:

And that's exactly why I refuse to post the name of the charter company.
Because I can't prove that the boat captain said all that. For all you know, I could be a competitor trying to discredit this company on a public message board.

*But*
I can prove everything else in my story. I'll do my best to show my story is real :14: The dates of the dive (June 17; 3-4 weeks ago). I still have the itinerary to st-paul they sent me from their business email.
I can 100% prove I was there that day. With that equipment.

To my fellow quebecois:

Is it that hard to believe? The American industry bashing ? The sense of elitism we often display thinking we do things better than other people ? The FQAS BS card ?

Think aboot it.

First post, yes, but like I said in my original post; I've been lurking here for a year.

What do you mean by 'outfit' I can't translate that ...

Outfit means what bussiness are they in are they just a dive boat a store. What are they?

I've heard of them from my parents that are currently in OW cert. Apparantly they gave pamphlets to the instuctors. I went to my LDS for more info, they too gave me the pamphlet with info on future dives, cost, requirements, etc.

The main mode of communication was thru emails.
They don't own a store or anything, they rent a 'pourvoirie' for the weekend and launch their boat from there.
