I prefer soft rolling bags over hard luggage for plane travel. The bag will typically be lighter and I think they actually stand up better - they bend rather than break, like the Samsonite stuff we used to use did several times. Carefully packed gear will be fine. Also more liveaboard and small plane friendly. If you really want to save weight you can go simple and skip built in carts, wheels, and other amenities, it's a matter of how easy it is to haul around for you.

For a mesh boat bag I'd skip wheels and look for something with backpack straps. Wheels are more bulk and weight to pack, and at a lot of places the path you might be taking say from room to truck or boat won't be wheel friendly anyway.
