    Sipadan Review

Thank you very much. Wow, 200 ft is far indeed. I have done the caverns of the Mayan Riviera and we didn't go that deep and far into the cave/cavern, and the DM had reels and redundant air supply.

    Sipadan Review

Wow. Thanks for sharing. I'm traveling there this June/July (if air tickets are available), staying at Borneo Divers Mabul Resort for a week (they promised 3-4 dives at Sipadan for the week). Did you wear a wetsuit? I'm deciding whether I should bring my 1mm or 3mm fullsuits. Bummer about the...

Calling all Warm water wimp divers

I, too, have slowed down the pace of life and stay away from cold water these days. This may be difficult as I'm not sure what you'd like to see on your dives - big animals or macro ones, soft or hard corals, are topside attractions important(?) etc. I used to frequent the Caribbean but I now...

    What will you pack?

I second buying the batteries in bulk on eBay and I'd change them before the trip (and bring an extra on the trip if it is >4 dive days). I have 2 computers - one uses CR2032, other uses CR2450. I try to pack essential gear in my carry on (mask, regs, computer, camera + housing), plus one set of...

    Live aboards what to expect?

Hi. Liveaboards range from the spartan (such as Blackbeards) to luxury so your expectations may vary, depending on what is provided on board. Privacy on the boat can vary depending on how full it is. Even with the large liveaboards, space tends to be a premium, so you don't want to pack lots of...

    questions about diving in Egypt/Indonesia/Malaysia/Thailand

Hi. I have not been to any of the places you mentioned (I'm going to Sipadan this June/July) but I have been to many places where every dive is a drift dive (Cozumel in Mexico, Nusa Penida in Bali). Most of these dive sites in current so f 1-3 knots are fine for beginners so long as they are...

    Where to go....

If this is any help, I came across this website of dive sites around SE Asia which might be helpful to you in your search: http://www.starfish.ch/dive Have a happy trip.

San Juan - Not Just Another Downwelling

Thanks for sharing, JenLoves2Dive. Your description was so detailed I felt like I was there and asked myself what I would have done at every juncture. It's amazing the situation was back to normal only a few minutes later and anyone in the water then would never have known what had just...

    Where to go....

The diving is definitely much better on Borneo side of Malaysia (i.e. Mabul, Sipadan, Layang Layang), although it is a longer flight from Thailand. Peninsular side of Malaysia has only so-so diving (i.e. Tioman, Redang), but OK if you just want to get wet. I heard someone mention there's decent...

SMB What kind & Where to Stow

Hmm, my view is if you ever need to deploy your SMB (to be seen by your dive boat), the bigger it is the better. I have 3 SMBs: 1. An 9 ft SMB (comes with sleeve, and a reel with 100ft line, too big - spur of the moment purchase, never used), 2. A 6ft SMB (which I put in a pouch with finger...

    Safety Sausage question

I put my 5ft OMS SMB, spool and double ender in a pouch with velcro flap secured to my waist cumberbund. I'll try setting mine up like this when I go diving this summer: YouTube - How to store DSMB and reel for diving

Do people lose gear all the time?

I've lost a slate and flooded 2 divelights so far. This probably doesn't count: had a $500 Tokina wide-angle lens drenched in seawater on a small boat (caused by a rogue wave), but it wasn't on a dive trip. Found a weight (encrustered with barnacles so I left it where I found it), a dive boat...

    OW + AOW timing?

I got certified and didn't dive for 2 years. My first dives since obtaining my c-card was AOW - in fact I went down to 80ft on the first AOW dive, I believe. If you're comfortable in the water (no issues with clearing your ears, good buoyancy control etc), as you apparently appear to be, and...

New diver - should I take my camera?

Hi, I know I'm late posting, but just wanna second the posts/advice so far. I'd put in a few dives till you're comfortable in the water (like 15-20 dives, no major issues with buoyancy control, navigation etc) before contemplating bringing along a camera. keep the camera on the boat if it's a...

    ScubaPro vs Oceanic gear

My first set of gear was Oceanic (Delta reg, Omega octo, SPG, Versa computer) and I was very happy with it (value for the money). Most of them were rated near the top by Rodales then in 2000-2002. I found if I were to get similar performing gear (regs, computer) in other brands, I'd likely have...

    What's in your pony?

Air. I use my pony for emergencies, so the same gas mix is in there for a few months at a time. I'd hate to have to fill it with different nitrox mixes for every dive (different depth). Doesn't make sense to me to fill it with nitrox unless I restrict my dives to the limits of the pony's nitrox mix.

    How to not Panic?

Thanks for sharing. This is nothing to be ashamed of. As I recall, surveys of divers indicate over half of them have experienced panic or near-panic underwater at least once in their life. Excellent advice from all the posters. I agree with using the purge button (put your tongue on the outlet...

Just picked up my new Atomic Regs!!!

Good choice. I own B2 (2 yr old, the swivel makes it leagues above my previous reg - love it) and recently added a Z2 octo. Have an awesome trip!

Equipment Report: Atomics B2 with SS1

Thanks for the comments on this thread. I use an Atomic B2 primary and was originally going to go with SS1 (after hearing Rodales Scubalab said how good they are), but I think I'll go with a Z2 octo now.
