WOOT! It's official! I am now OW Certified and could not possibly be more EXCITED!!

I used to have a lot of trouble with descending too. What my mentor told me to do is to exhale as soon as the BC is deflated. The first 5 feet or so are the hardest. Usually after I get past that I can inhale while continuing to descend. divergirl

    Nervous about Diving

I was really scared before my first OW dives, but remember that the dive instructors and DMs are there to make sure you don't get into any trouble. Like others have said, practice the mask clearing! You could even go snorkeling in your local pool - I've seen people do that. Just take it easy and...

    Don't underestimate your local mudhole

I like Cove 2. That's where I saw my first and only (so far) GPO! :)

    Gloves in cold water

Yowch! How do you do that? I dive in Puget Sound too, and my hands get cold in 7mm wet gloves! I can't wait to get dry gloves! :shocked2: divergirl

    Mentors?

Just my 2 cents worth. I am a new diver. Through luck or chance I happened to meet an experienced diver of over 800 dives and his wife with over 1000. He helped me to find a used, inexpensive dry suit and then offered to teach me to use it. I agreed and ever since then we have been diving...

    Navigation

For me, as a very new diver, my main problem with navigation is that it is kind of overwhelming to pay attention to lots of things at once. I've mainly been focusing on buoyancy/trim and letting my buddy do navigation for me. Of course, these have been shallow dives that don't cover a wide area...

    OW cold issues

Thanks everyone for all the advice! She's decided to stick with Seattle Scuba. She has been reading all of your responses though she's not an SB member and thinks that trying your suggestions will work - particularly hot water/taking off the wetsuit at least down to the waist. Thanks again...

    OW cold issues

She's certifying through Seattle Scuba Schools and they don't offer the OW training in a dry suit. They don't let you rent dry suits unless you have taken a dry suit course. But the hot water sounds like it'll really help! Thanks! She's planning to start diving dry as soon as she's certified...

    OW cold issues

Hi all, A friend of mine is getting certified next week. She's not very nervous except for one thing - the cold. She's diving in the Puget Sound where the water temp currently is around 50 degrees F. OW is done in 7mm wetsuits at the shop she's certifying through and she gets cold pretty...

Why are so many female divers codependent?

Wow, this thread is making me chuckle to myself - but then my situation is a little different from most people's. I started diving simply because I am interested in the underwater world. I didn't know anyone who does scuba and through it I have met people and also have convinced some others to...

    Donating to an OOA

In my PADI OW course I was taught that the donor hands the OOA their alternate second stage and that after you signal you wait for it to be handed to you. However, I recently started diving with a buddy who has a 7 foot hose and octo and told me that if I was OOA I should just snatch the reg...

    Equalization methods for beginners

I use the valsalva method too but I'm afraid that I might be blowing too hard so I am going to try the Frenzel technique - pinch your nose, inflate your nose, and bob your adam's apple. I've heard that it's more effective. It's described in the video on the page Scuba_Noob mentioned. I would...

What are the "who knew"s of scuba?

Who knew that I would EVER get the hang of neutral buoyancy? ;)

    Left ear feels plugged.

Yes, I agree with flots am. Watch the video on that link! I had the same feeling and the video explains everything and also gives new tips on equalizing that could be more effective. If you're using the Valsalva method (pinch your nose and blow) you might be blowing too hard, causing barotrauma...

    Drysuit Boots

The laces did not come undone. I feel like when I kick, the shoes are just coming off because of the motion. I should be getting some lighter fins soon - my current ones are really heavy and stiff - and that might help. I do think high tops would work much better, as the fin straps might be...

    Drysuit Boots

I'm a new diver and, under guidance, I bought a used O.S. systems shell suit for $100 off Craigslist. :D It's pretty old, but the owner took really good care of it and it's basically like new after about 10 years. Plus, it fits me and I'm really small - 5'2", 105 pounds. For some reason, the...
