Does nitrogen narcosis mimic alcohol use?

I think the comparison is a gross oversimplification. A friend of mine (who would know such things), told me that he thought it was very similar to sniffing rubber cement.

    VR3 Costs

I got mine from scuba.com. They’re currently listing the open circuit trimix model with the black and white screen for $1,299.95 US. If anyone knows of a better price, I’d love to hear it – I’m in the market for a backup. (Mine just went wacko again and is going back to the factory…)

    Have regulators improved lately??

No way. Breath a high end Apeks, Atomic, or Poseidon and then breath a mainstream reg like a Mares at 100 feet. HUGE difference. Look at the design of a Poseidon Xstream first stage. Ball bearing seat, cold water ready without some sort of cap or sealing system, etc.

Moving in order to dive more, a crazy idea?

Kbeck: Old enough to be done with school and young enough to not have a mortgage. Actually I’m going to be doing my work at home stint (a large programming project) until around January of next year, so finding employment isn’t an issue. I can be anywhere as long as I have electricity and...

Moving in order to dive more, a crazy idea?

I’m currently in between “real jobs” and working from home for a little bit. (Well, actually I don’t do any work at home – I spend a lot of money at a local coffee shop.) The lease on my house here in New Orleans runs out at the end of June, so I have to move. I was originally thinking of...

PRO/CON Cutting tool tip and blade options

Unless you need to cut rope or steel leader, consider a z-knife. Small, sharp, easy to mount, easy to use.

    Nitrox compatible tank modification?

I understand that Crystal Simple Green is preferred because it doesn’t leave a film/residue like plain Simple Green can.

    Good shears

Okay, I have a dumb question… How do people attach their shears in their pocket? I keep mine in my left drysuit pocket, in their sheath, with a double-ended stainless bolt snap (one end of the snap on the pocket d-ring, the other through the thumb hole of the handle). It just seems like a...

    Has anyone tried these yet?

I use the Halcyon – and I like it very very much. Design is very solid. They’re virtually unjamable. I wouldn’t own anything else for a primary or larger. The only downside is they’re kind of pricey. It takes a little while to adjust to the hand configuration you use when reeling them...

    Has anyone tried these yet?

I inspected one at my LDS the other day. A (very) cheap knockoff of the Halcyon reel. A decent reel? Yes. But nowhere near the quality of the Halcyon. (And this is coming from someone who generally likes Dive-Rite equipment.)

    shortening a Transpac belt

Just cut where you want and burn the end - same as cutting any other piece of nylon webbing. You do want to leave plenty of room for heavy drysuit underwear, etc. If the cummerbund is too large, you can get a smaller one. With a 30” waist, I have an ML harness with a small cummerbund. If...

Intro Cave - Singles or Doubles

There’s really no additional safety gained from doing Intro in doubles. Unless you have a heart attack, your instructor will bring you out of the cave alive. Period. The only real advantage to using doubles for an Intro class IMO is that it gives you experience with them in a cave if you...

    10w 21w

I dive caves with a 10w. I sometimes dive with people using the 50w halogens, and I took my Intro Cave course with one. I think the 10w HID is quite a bit brighter than the 50w halogen. The 10w HID is bright enough, though sometimes I wish my light was just a little brighter to really punch...

    Best overall BC made Period

Hahahaha. Best overall BC period? There isn't one. Well, at least not one that everyone will agree on. I do like my Transpac though. :D

    P-valve installation

I prefer the silicone versions such as the Mentor Freedom Clear and Clear Advantage. They have a stronger adhesive in them. I swear, the stuff is like roofing cement. But no leaks! Oh, this is one area where sizing is pretty important. Too small and they can be difficult to put on. Too...

    P-valve installation

If you are gluing on the gaskets for a removable valve like the Dive Rite, here’s a suggestion. After gluing the two gaskets on, instead of tightening the valve down to hold the gaskets against the suit, use a bolt with washers big enough to cover the entire gasket surface. It will give you a...

why is zeagle brand looked down upon

For the most part, I don’t think people “look down” upon the Zeagle gear. Zeagle has a strong following, but mainly among inland recreational divers. You won’t find many tech divers with the stuff, and you won’t find all that many coastal dive shops with it (relative to shops that carry other...

    Peacock Line

Looking at the standard in detail, I’m still not entirely convinced that Pothole violates it. You would not be jumping or gapping (spelling?) to a “secondary passageway,” but merely continuing along the “singular passageway,” staying on the mainline. And I certainly wouldn’t consider it to...

    So Confused about fins :sigh:

I think no matter what you do, you’ll probably end up buying another pair of fins eventually. I have a pair of Mares Volos with spring straps added on later that were my first pair of fins. I have a pair of Dive Rite fins with spring straps for drysuit diving, and.... And a pair of closed...

    Peacock Line

Here are the actual NSS standards for Single Tank Intro Diver: Penetrations; utilizing one third or less of a single cylinder. Maximum penetration volume is 30 cubic feet - 850 L of gas. Minimum volume at start of dive is 70 cu.ft. - 1980 L Linear penetrations only; dives limited to a...
