So If I get a Shearwater I can skip those boring Deco stops?

Nope. Something is strange with my SUUNTO D4 calculation. My dive buddy has much less DECO (2 minutes) with the same dive profile, while I have 6 minutes. SUUNTO algorithm is way too conservative. It forces me to stay longer and when I clear it and ascend, the D10 (DECO with 10’ ceiling) pops up again and forces me to descend and stay for another couple minutes. I was up & down like a yo-yo in 8-16’ range. Once Teric clears my DECO stop & safety stop, it’s done.

In my normal diving, Teric clears my safety stop 1-2 minutes sooner than D4. That is with GF Conservative Medium 40/85 set on Teric. So SUUNTO D4 RGBM is just way conservative for my diving style.

I put my D4 on left wrist & Teric on my right wrist and compare them next to each other during the entire dive.

In safety stop, whenever I go deeper than 27’, Teric pauses the safety stop countdown, (say I still have 2 more minutes remaining to be in that safety stop) and when I’m back to shallower than 20’, it will resume the countdown from 2 minutes to zero. If I use D4, it would reset (instead of pause) the safety stop countdown back to 3 minutes and I need to stay for another 3 minutes, instead of for the remaining 2 minutes.

If you have ever been diving in area that have surging, upwelling & down current like in Roca Partida, Socorro, Mexico, you know what I’m talking about. It’s not easy stay in safety stop (7-20’ range). Sometime the down current sucks you down, you have to fin up like mad + inflating your BCD. Sometime the upwelling pushes you to the surface so you have to head down & deflate your BCD to stay in safety stop.

This page in Teric Manual explains my problem better than my poor English:

I'm confident I could do a CESA from pretty much any depth I usually dive to. I've recently swam 50m underwater in a pool. But I would attempt to grab my buddy's alternate as my first option.
Yes, but of course swimming uw holding your breath (well yeah) as fast as you can is not relevant to doing a CESA.

My Suunto Eon Core works very similarly to what you describe for the Teric for safety stops.

There is no lockout for omitting a safety stop. (deco stops are a different story)

It also pauses and resumes the safety stop when I drop below 6m. So it if has counted down to 1:45seconds and I drop to 6.5 meters for a minute then ascend back up to 5.9 meters it resumes counting down from 1:45

I've got a significant margin for error in there as my usual dives max out at 28m or so and I've never gone below 40m.

You have not experienced the real CESA situation. Theory & the real world are two different beast. When you can’t suck any air out of your reg at depth, you would appreciate what I’m talking about. You would get tunnel vision, stress, panic, etc. Having that Spare Air has kept me from panicking, rationalizing the situation as I know I have a minute or two to breathe and ascend if I can’t reach to my buddy at depth. At least I can get to shallower water before I have to CESA.

I can get from 65 feet to the surface comfortably. Remember the air in your tank will become available as you ascend. Below 65 feet I carry an AL 20 with the same mix as my back gas. Makes life a little easier and may even be able to do a safety stop. But this is all speculation because in 55 years of diving I’ve never run out of breathing gas. Nor has anyone I’ve been diving with.

I totally agree about suuntos rgbm. The authorithm Is very conservative. Once I took deco, I immediately realized I needed something that could allow GF. So now I have two perdix AI.

I really like my suunto otherwise. I know my suunto core allows changing the rgbm to a more aggressive or conservative setting. Since you dive with both see if the D4 more aggressive setting matches more closely with your GF settings.

How do I change the GF settings in SUUNTO D4?

It would be listed in the user manual and you should be able to download it. RTFM is always the best way.

I don't see any option to change D4 setting. Why don't you RTFM and tell me. If you don't know what you are talking about, just zip it!
