@Seraphimx: With the right size bolt-snap, proper technique, and a little practice, these disadvantages disappear. 2 min. is a looooong time to be futzing with a gauge. If it takes you that long to unclip/read/clip-off, then I'm not surprised you've chosen to go in a different direction.

It doesn't really take 2 min (don't know since I've never timed it. But it takes enough time for me to get really INTO unclipping the SPG and noticing that I drifted away a few foot from buddies etc.) But thanks again for the tips, I'll try with a larger clip.

Why i wrote in this thread was to notify that I have been using left chest D-ring, hose wasn't too short/long and the downside was the clutter on the chest d-ring (inflator+spg+backup light) I hadn't noticed it was in the DIR section, like Capt Jim Wyatt; I looked at the new posted threads.

I am not GUE trained. I'm just a dumb old rec diver, but I do dive a HOG rig. I will at times carry a slung pony on my left.

IMO, the left hip is the correct place for the SPG on a 26 " hose (for most), not 24", when diving a single cylinder.

Unnecessary snark removed. Sorry kids.

My apologies to the members of this forum. My awareness was off & I did not realize this was a DIR forum. I have never waded into a DIR forum and run my mouth off about gear configuration, and it will not happen again. Sorry for the

:hijack:

No worries, it happens to all of us from time to time. :)

How exactly? The long hose is routed under the light canister. The SPG hose would come under the right shoulder and be clipped directly to the chest d-ring unobtrusively.

Remove SPG to show buddy, reclip on top of the long hose by accident. Or under long hose but on top of light cord or myriad of other CFs.

If the long hose has a need to be clipped then you have finished with your back gas and do not need to check it again, so it you can clip off an not worry about retrieval; if you view the D-ring as over crowded. You will not be taking anything off until the surface.

And where's the primary reg when you are on a deco gas? Switching between deco gases or diving stages? Its on the right chest... The right chest is like a utility space, it gets crowded with cookies, arrows, spare stuff. A SPG there would suck.

I started converting to DIR this winter. It was still dry gloves season and clipping it to the hip made me a bit nervous.

I took the chance while diving in warm water last week and started clipping it to the hip. After a few dives it worked like a charm and it's defo less clutter than together with the inflator. Now I look forward to using it with 5 mm for the rest of the summer season and with dry gloves come winter.

I think for me having it clipped away at the hip also helps telaxing and not constantly checking my air consumption.

Out of curiosity, how often do you show your SPG to your buddy? I find hand signals work fine, or if they're much better trained than I am, generally they just sneak a peek on my hip.... Is it a reciprocal thing, to make sure buddies in whom you're less than 100% confident show you theirs too?

I dive mine on my right shoulder, very easy to access and my buddy can see it clearly. I used to have it on my left hip, but it is a hassle to get off while slinging stage/deco cylinders. I works for me and some other DIR style divers are starting to copy this setup. If it’s good enough for a breather, it’s good enough for OC.

Hold it up at roughly shoulder level in left hand with dial facing them. Showing the gauge was part of the GUE s-drill until recently and remains part of the UTD s-drill.

In an OOA situation, you want the recipient to "get it" that you you plenty of gas to exit.

It wasnt taught specifically in my fundamentals class, but it seems a good way to communicate gas and allow the guy who just had OOA to calm a bit.
