It is VASTLY superior for that type of diving which is why the dive shops don't want to change.
I think this is true - they don't wanna change. Which to me is very old thinking. I like DIN because I've never lost an o-ring on that reg. I can't count the no of o-rings I've lost on my yoke style tank valves though. It's like they are spring loaded. Hence my decision to change over to DIN.

I don't think you've seen very many inserts.

And I think you should do some research before speaking. You are an instructor, behave like one.
We use an 8mm Hex key. I believe you need a 1/4" in the States.

Here is a picture of four different sizes that I grabbed from my tool box.
From left (largest) to right (smallest): 8mm, 1/4 inch, 6mm, 5mm.

Of which I've already mentioned 3, the 8mm being the most common one in EU (strongest).
So, what drove you to conclude that I haven't seen enough inserts?

AND

Why do you need to be so impolite in the 1st place? You could just have added whatever information you wanted in order to assist @BigDaddyGlad, instead you opted to play 'smart'...

did notice that the tanks all had the removable insert, but I didn't have an allen key with me. I'd like to not have to purchase an entire set of keys; which size would be the one to get to keep in my dive bag, or is there a particular recommended tool?

Most inserts use an 8mm Allen key (less common is a 6mm key).

So the guy from Canada asked what size key he needed. Your answered (my words) probably an 8mm, maybe a 6mm.
I questioned that.
You responded, "we use an 8mm" and that we use a 1/4 inch in the US. He is in Canada.
I provided a picture of four different sizes.
You are upset because I think that you gave very poor information to the guy asking a very simple question, to which the answer should have been: "there is no way to know what size insert is in your tanks, because they come in at least four different sizes. You'll have to try several wrenches to find one that fits your inserts."

I have about 40 tanks in my dive school's rental/training tank fleet from different vendors (SP, AL, Mares) and the tanks come from the three EU factories and they are all 8mm inserts and only 1 insert with 6mm size. I was in Egypt about two months ago and ALL the tanks I had there used 8mm key (I dove with different dive operations who all used AL tanks). I carry 8mm key with me nothing else.

First of all, Initially I didn't saw that the guy was from Canada. My bad and that's why I added the 1/4" afterwards.

Second, questioning the fact that I mentioned 6mm and 8mm to someone shouldn't equal "I don't think you've seen very many inserts." That's not only offending but also untrue.

Third, the 8mm is NOT exclusive to the EU. It is very popular in the US as well. You can read below past posts from folks in this forum living in Washington, Florida, etc. Therefore my information was not wrong.

DIN insert allen key size

Fourth, your answer could also have been: "the most common sizes are the 8mm and 1/4" with the less common the 5mm and 6mm". That's what upsets me, your tone, not the possibility of being wrong. Some of us don't have huge EGOs, especially when our lives are at risk.

As I stated previously, I am not going to be disrespected nor bullied in a diving forum. I reply with exactly the same tone I am addressed with. In the future, I will appreciate if you don't rush to conclusions without any background information.

Closing, as a relatively new member and from the private messages I am getting, it is quite disappointing to see that many members here are afraid to post their opinion or disagree with Admins, older forum members, etc due to the fear of been confronted in the same way. Shame.

You have presented yourself as THE expert on DIN vs Yoke in this thread, pretty much rejected all other input, demeaned Americans, and have a very thin skin. OK, press on.
