Have to side with red on this one.................just finished AOW and not worth much.............that being said the instructor was .......DIR....oooooooooo the padi ears are burning as that is the cert I got......I think......could be Naui..... ahhh what ever......Instructors make the course and I was sure glad I didn't need to buy a snorkle..........or remove the 7' beast of animosity..........:D

I have a quesstion. Would you rather dive a quarry with a DIR diver or the Monterey California canyon with a SAFE NAUI or PADI diver who has been there dozens of times.

Why not dive the quarry with a DIR diver and Monterey with another DIR diver (Better yet with scooters)... The nice thing about standardization is that if is amazingly easy to form a team regarless of location.... :)

edit: This has taken off lie crazy... and Lynne isn't even here :)

Safe by who's standard?

Since I was PADI trained and my primary dive buddy is NAUI trained, and we do predive drills religiously at the beginning of each and every dive, I'd rather dive Monterey with a safe NAUI DIR diver. :)

I think the thing that gets lost in all of the internet "long hose with bungeed backup" discussions are that its not just gear. For me, the beginning of every dive begins with the standard safety checks which includes (but isn't limited to) a mock OOG deployment of the long hose going to the bungeed backup (modified s-drill). Its not just the gear, its practicing how to use it. Every dive. THAT is my idea of being a safe diver.

Let me clarify. I don't mean any ill will at all. My question is you have someone who has made dozens of dives in the same location and knows the ins and outs and dangers. You have a Dir buddy who does not know the area. Who do you feel safer with? Don't change the perameters of my question just answer it. If it were the same knowledge of location I would choose DIR. I know you guys know your stuff. But will you conceed that there is another level to all of this?

You bring the scooters and I am down. I'll be the tour guide or visa versa. I do not in any way mean to start trouble. I am just asking an honest question and will respect any response. Just don't answer my question with a question. I think I have an open mind and will admit the DIR crew spank me when it comes to skills. I would love to show you my back yard and have you teach me some superior skills. I think that is why we are all here isn't it?

I think you're trying to make a point that doesn't really need making.

There are safe divers originally trained by all sorts of agencies. Just as there are "experienced" divers who are not safe, nor prove to have good technique or skills underwater.
Again, I don't think people would say that only diver who follow DIR are safe (we're still talking about OW diving right?).

Though, I would think that you'd rather dive with someone who thinks through their gear choices and how they relate, stays in shape, practices their skills regularly and is attentive to whom they dive with etc etc etc. I don't think DIR has any unique claim to any of those pieces. :)

Mostly, I'm against muppet. Maybe I can start "DAM" Divers Against Muppets. Kind of catchy, don't you think?

okey sorry for going off topic (Like that's ever happened before)

I would rather stick with a DIR diver... I know we are on the same page when it comes to skills and procedures. Nothing against a "SAFE NAUI or PADI" diver but I think that because My DIR buddy and I share the same mindset and team focus we can enjoy the dive more.

It's a bit difficult to explain but with a well put together team the usual new buddy anxiety isn't there... thru good passive and active communication and situational awareness you are put to ease a lot faster.
