Yikes.

Domestic terrorism, I guess. Double yikes.

No, that was in reference to the "manta" that was found. There is no known connection between the two.

I don't understand what you mean, can you elaborate? The article on Reuters does not mention that word and seems to be fairly straightforward in the wording.

A manta is a sheet or blanket with writing on it, usually threatening someone or taking credit for a murder of another rival gang or organization.
The sign that was found, which threatened the mayor and claimed credit for the explosion, has not been shown to be actually conected to the explosion. The signers of the manta are unknown in Q.Roo.

Here's the US State Department website. I don't see anything about ferry usage.

Mexico Travel Advisory

"There are no restrictions on U.S. government employees for travel in Quintana Roo state, which includes tourist areas such as: Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and the Riviera Maya."

This warning came from the US embassy in Mexico as a security alert, not a travel advisory. I received the email because of enrollment in the Smart traveler enrollment program (step). I don’t know anything else besides this email.

I signed up for the Smart Traveler program as well and I often get emails from the embassy in Abu Dhabi about things not listed on the official State Dept. travel advisory section.

Ok then. I will take a deep breathe as we cross to Cozumel tomorrow from PDC and again a week later back. I don’t want to live in fear. I have been in PDC for two weeks. Wish us luck?....

From today's news:

Two pumps on a boat

COZUMEL, March 1 .- Found other explosive devices in a Caribbean Ship, and was confirmed by the shipping company, in the hull of the boat, one in the bow and one aft. This issue is considered a matter of national security that has been misrepresented by the Port Authority of Quintana Roo (Apiqroo) and state authorities.
One was a cylinder about 30 centimeters long that was moored to the "shovel", located in the aft part of the ship Caribe II, which for a year, is anchored in rada, in front of the Port Captaincy. In marine terms, they call the "spoiler" the species of spoiler that directs the ship to be directly connected to the rudder on the bridge.
The discovery occurred around 1:00 pm on Wednesday, when a diver hired by the shipping company that owns Barcos Caribe, entered the sea to hold the boat to two "dead" concrete and to change ropes.
After half an hour of work, he gave a visual check to the hull of the boat, managing to notice at about 3:30 p.m., of the cylindrical objects fastened, for which he left and informed the crew who immediately informed him. to the directive of the shipping company, reporting immediately to the Naval Military Sector of Cozumel.
Five minutes later, a model ship Defender of the Secretary of the Navy, made his arrival to the place, to control the maritime traffic in the area by the proximity to the Port of Shelter Bank Beach, a maritime shelter that at that time they begin to enter the boats of nautical tourism. No boat was allowed to sail on the coast between the Caribbean II and the coastline, but outside.
Since the explosion happened in the Caribbean I, on February 21 of this year, the event has been considered as a national security issue by the intervention of the Attorney General's Office (PGR), National Security, the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) of the United States, and now with the appearance of the bombs that has been a news spread quickly at international level, the PGR has ordered to send experts from the city of Cancun, Thursday night to help with the research.
While this issue has been misrepresented by state authorities and by the same Apiqroo, that after the explosion of the Caribbean I, they left by means of their director Alicia Ricalde Magaña, to mention that the explosion had been by a mechanical failure and with that position they pretended continue inside the meeting held in the same pier of Navega in Playa del Carmen, according to not to affect tourism or the image of the destination.
In fact, in the manipulation of the information of the state entity, they intend to include and give credit to a blanket that appeared in Cozumel signed by two pseudo narcomenudistas, without a preponderant weight in the underworld of organized crime.
So it seems that the appearance of the same, obeyed to divert and confuse the course of investigations with a clear objective that is to exculpate the authorities of the Apiqroo and Ultramar shipping company, owned by Germán Orozco Sarro, who hand in hand Boats Mexico, just a few hours after the sanctions imposed on Barcos Caribe as the suspension of their crossings, increase the tariffs without any regulation.
On a maritime tour made by the vicinity of the ship by the newspaper POR ESTO! Quintana Roo, it was possible to confirm that it was being protected at a prudent distance by the ship of the Secretary of the Navy. Similarly, at a distance from the Caribbean II, the Caribbean III ship was moving, the only operable that the shipping company had.
It should be noted that the presence of the Caribbean III in the area, was because from Wednesday afternoon, the Apiqroo decided to remove it from the berthing band that it had in San Miguel dock, for that reason it had to anchor in the roadstead next to the Caribbean II, just to which the explosive devices were tied.
It was 20:15 hours, when they reported that specialists from the Secretariat of the Navy, came to the site discreetly and went to dive to recognize the device and proceed with its withdrawal and that they were accompanied by experts from the PGR, from the city of Cancun .
On the boardwalk of this part of the city there was no movement of federal or municipal forces, controlling access to the northern hotel zone, where everything went smoothly, except for the difficulty represented by vehicles to pave streets. Meanwhile, the bombs on the Caribbean II ship were alerted, around 4:00 p.m., there was the mobilization of soldiers from the Secretariat of the Navy at the San Miguel pier, where only the people with a ticket in hand passed by. boarding a boat to Playa del Carmen.
Within a few minutes, elements of the Federal Police, the PGR, and even the Presidential General Staff were added to the maritime terminal, together with intelligence elements from the Secretariat of the Navy, with whom they exchanged information and placed themselves in strategic locations of discreet way not to create alarm, and around 9:00 pm, they left the place.

More details on yesterdays finding:

This was found on a Barcos Caribe CARGO boat - not a passenger ferry. This boat has not been is use for more than 6 months and has been anchored out in front of Sedena, about 100 yards off shore. In this case, there was no threat whatsoever to tourists. There is clearly a threat on Barcos Caribe - but it is not narco terrorism, it is directly targeted at Barcos Caribe and the owner, our former Governor Borge who is in prison on corruption charges related to his purchase of these vessels among other things.

All levels of government and military are remaining vigilant and there is extra security on the ferries both coming and going. Don't be alarmed by this, be grateful for it - I've always thought there should be security boarding the ferries just like there is for flights.

The "threat" to Mayor Perla is NOT related and was a scare tactic from some copycat vigilantes in attempts to scare her and prevent her from running. There have been A LOT of political shenanigans from extremist supporters of the opposing party to make Perla and her administration look bad - SAME THING that is going on with extremists on either side of the US political scene - but even on a much smaller scale here.

Because her term was cut short by new election rules, she is permitted to run for re-election.

I DO encourage anyone who is crossing on a ferry to use Ultramar or Mexico WaterJets.
