Trident DIN Converter for Scubapro

Two dumb questions: 1. Is it possible that the 6mm hex end was designed to unscrew from the barrel (like some Poseidons) and the filter just slide out once the hex end is removed? Could this end be overtorqued and turn the whole barrel instead of the insert? Usually in this case there's another, larger hex inside the removable end and that's how you remove the bolt from the first stage body.

2. Have you considered calling Trident and asking them how it's supposed to come out? Could be it 's NOT supposed to be removable, but that's a little far-fetched to me.
 
I took another look and, I can't tell for sure, but is that a small flat surface in pic 3 on the bottom radius that might engage an open end wrench? If so, the allen wrench on one end and a box end wrench on the other might reveal the secret.

No, there's no flat surface nowhere, no slot either.

I looked at the DIN end with a 10x loupe and the thing really appears to be in one piece. I tried to hold the body with a plier and a rag, and unscrew the Allen, but it doesn't work either.

I just sent a mail to Trident and I'll keep you posted if they reply.

I think it's the bushing/spacer scenario I described in my first post, just like the older style SP fittings. You just have to pull that bushing out with a pick or something.

Wow you're still working on this; impressive. Thanks for the parts, BTW!

I just can't imagine what the issue is if I've understood everything so far:

1. The retainer has a filter installed which is not currently removable
2. The tank end has a 6 mm allen fitting, not a 4mm or 5/32
3. You removed the tank side o-ring and determined with a loupe that that end is solid metal, not a threaded fitting like the current SP.

If those things are all true, I'd be very surprised if it's not a tight fitting bushing in the reg end. I just don't see any other way. You could try heating it up a bit, maybe it will fall right out.

Actually, I pull it out of the closet once in a while, but I'm in no hurry at all. I launched Plan B, which is to invest heavily in some DIN inserts for 5 bucks, and we're good the world over with our yokes.

All 3 points above are true, and I'll give it another try one of these days. However, I'm realizing this is not such an interesting alternative to the original SP part: about the same price, more difficult to service (air filter), and possibly needs a different filter. I can't even recycle the metal wheel to replace the plastic one of SP: it's a bit thicker than the original, so the retaining o-ring doesn't fit.

I wonder if Trident has a business plan for this item at all?

I gave the trident A166 a shot to convert a Mk5 to din. Didn't work. Would not even work in a Mk10 as the threads were binding pretty bad at least a full turn before the retainer would have been properly seated in the Mk10 body. I believe there is a bit too much chrome on the retainer threads that is causing this. One of these days, I'll take it to a shop and have the threads cleaned up.

But, looking at that retainer, I'm beginning to think that Matt is right. The allen fitting on the A166 is 6mm and looks just like yours. The only obvious difference is the shoulder on the business end similar to the shoulder on the Scubapro universal retainer. Now my washer falls right out when the o-ring is removed (one good reason to keep a clean floor in your work-space). Maybe they added a little adhesive to keep folks from losing that washer accidentally.

BTW, I did manage to recycle the trident din wheel by installing it on a Scubapro universal retainer with a modifies new plastic saddle and a couple shims between the retainer and the reg body and installing it on a Mk5. It is working fine. I had to modify the saddle to prevent the din wheel from binding when the retainer was correctly torqued.
