Was there a Tech 2+ released at the same time as the Tech 1+? I saw a reference to this, but last time I looked for it, I couldn't find those limits in the standards or in any other material...

You know, after thinking about this for a few mins, I HAVE done 45 mins with one gas (o2). The dive was 90ft avg for 120ish mins, if I recall correctly. We had a total obligation of 45ish mins.

I think its unwise to do a deeper dive (something in the 150ft range) with only a 50% bottle, however.

What the rationale behind the new levels of statification within GUE? Is this escalation between GUE and UTD (Tech 1, Tech 1+, vs. Tech 1 Gold??). Just curious. I always like the fact that the GUE ciricullum was very clear cut and concise but it seems like this is no longer the case. Are T1 divers required to go through T1+ before T2?

There is no requirement to do GUE T1+ before GUE T2. The GUE T1+ class is for those who simply want a bit (i.e. one day) of formal instruction before adding a second bottle (in this case, a bottom stage). The UTD T2 Gold class (for me!) was about getting two days of formal instruction to add a second bottle (either a bottom stage or second deco bottle). For some people, the right answer is just to sign up for T2 (or the UTD equivalent), for others, they can choose to add the stage on their own (mentoring, self-practice, etc), and now for others, there are a few "classes" (again, really more like 1-2 day seminars).

I do agree, though, that this is all rather confusing for what it really is (a bit more training under supervision).

It's purely to satisfy individual life insurance policies. There were some pretty indepth discussions a few months back on the quest list about peoples life insurance companies not covering them because they were diving beyond the limitations of their highest level of diving certifications. Particularly Tech2 divers diving beyond 250 feet. A few weeks later GUE announced the + rating.

Yes - at the same time. I can't find it anywhere in the site, until I login as a member:

My Membership Benefits -> Procedure Documents -> Standards Changes

Ah, I have an account, but I'm not a paying member right now, so I can't get to that...

I'm doing GUE Tech 1 next Feb, quite looking forward to it... :)

I have to be honest, the T1+ rating is probably something I would not do - just way to inconvenient. Whilst I may be naive - if you have learnt the mechanics of doing a gas switch properly with one deco gas then it doesn't seem that much of a stretch to apply the same principles to dealing with two gasses, whether they are bottom stage or two deco gasses. It seems somewhat limited to insist that a T1+ diver only takes a bottom stage as their second tank when the skill set is essentially the same, irrespective of what the tank contains.

Maybe I'll change my mind after Feb 2010??? :)

From my very limited experience, I would say that there are some different skills required to manage two bottles. Clipping one on and off is pretty trivial, after the first couple of tries, but managing and sorting two is another story. In addition, there is definitely some situational awareness to be learned about remembering WHICH gas supply you are on, what the status of the others is, and having that solidly enough in your mind to react properly in an urgent situation. Granted, this was based on my experience in Cave 2, but I think it would generalize to a Tech 1+ or Tech 2 situation as well.

Of course, I'm a very slow learner.
