Was the ship purposely sunk and when? Thanks!

Nah, it's a proper wreck.... sinking was full of mystery and intrigue, as the (local) pilot chose to navigate the ship through a narrow, shallow passage.

The pilot was allegedly drinking with the Russian crew prior to piloting the ship out of harbour.

A couple of days after the sinking, another Russian ship supposedly appeared on the scene and after visiting the crash site, the cargo doors were found to be open.

It's got so many conspiracy theories in the mix, it's nearly as much fun speculating these as it is actually diving the wreck!

Details of the ship's last voyage here:

MIKHAIL LERMONTOV - The New Zealand Maritime Record - NZNMM

And, just to keep it on topic, it's not only in Tech 1 limits but Fundies limits to!

Thanks for info. Sounds like you have a cool back yard for diving. :)

Certainly can't complain! :cool2:

We're going to start arranging trips to the Lermontov for DIR divers from the US and Europe in 2011 onwards... all people will need to do is get a flight booked, we will pick people up from the airport and arrange everything else so you just dive her for five days straight, three dives a day.... :yeahbaby:

Our current four day trips are priced at NZ$825, which is about US$600 on the current exchange rate.... which includes all accommodation, food and boat costs. It's an extra US$6 for a nitrox fill, but if you wanted to dive air (we are a bit backward in terms of gasses) then it's included.

As our Prime Minister said on Letterman a couple of months ago.... "A convenient twelve hour flight away!"
