I've had an 'el-cheap-o' ratches strap come undone. but the better ones you should have no problem with. I've seen the 'no-name' compression buckle straps that other used fail before also... (luckily I've never experienced that...)

I use the NRS ones for my kayak. They work great. For a canoe though, because it would catch much more air, I'd double up a set if using compression buckle straps, or go with the stronger rachet sets (like bugman mentioned).

For reference, here are the NRS ones I was talking about. I've got the 1" ones. if you're going to primaryly carry a canoe instead, I'd suggest the stronger 1.5" ones.

They put the length on the strap also with their name. so a NRS-15 is 15foot for example.

These don't stretch, even when wet and under 80mph stress for 4 hours.

We use the cheap brand just about every day, When placing the stringers or bands on a house on pylons, we will use these straps to pull the crown out of a 2x12x20 pressure treated board. Now I’m not talking flat ways of the board either, sometimes our bands are three boards high and they all got to be pulled flush so the decking (plywood flooring) will be level. They come five in a pack at Wally World for under $10.00 Those 1'' rachet straps are one of mans greatest inventions

Mat, I'm wanting to do Cypress, but I'll have to figure out a way to get a canoe there b/c there is NO way I could get one on my car (little silver sporty-ish car). Eek.

Not sure if Denise told you, but I will be pitching on her site, #9. :D
Frank, just talked to Johnny Mac at Vortex. Denise is on 12. Caroline (Lives4Sharks) is 9. And I'm 8a or 8b or something like that. I don't mind someone borrowing part of my site, either. We're all family here, lol! :D

OK guys, I got the booze, the meat is marinating, the camping gear is packed up, and all the scuba is accounted for and assembled! Now just got to pack the car and I am ready!

3 MORE DAYS!!!!

I use the cheap ones(ratchet straps) :) and I use them ALOT. A single 1" cheapO ratchet strap will hold a canoe in place, albeit you might want a guideline coming off the front(or back) to keep it from going cattywompus!

Dunno what brand mine are, but you better believe they're cheap. I've used other cheap brands with nothing but success as well. The only time I've had to replace them are when they start rusting out - which occassionally happens when you use them as much as I do around saltwater.

Same brand compression straps(I mistakenly bought them, thinking they were ratchet straps) simply didn't hold tight. I'm sure the higher brand ones do better, but I'm not going to spend the money on them when cheapy ratchet straps work perfectly fine.

We use ratchet straps for slabs of granite too :) They aren't 1"ers, but the design is all the same!

The cam-compression straps I posted above are great over the 'el cheapos'. Of course they cost 3 times more also than the wally world rachet ones.

but I agree with you that on a canoe, I'd use the rachet ones. much more wind catching area and I'd prefer the extra security of the lock/click ratchet.

I am bringing a canoe and would have room for another on top of my pickup camper, really want to do the cypress trip. Bought a very large boston butt roast to bbq up late saturday, need to go buy some rum and rumrunner mix and maybe some other food also,my wife and son are also making the trip. We should get there around lunch time friday,I am going to get camp set up then do a dive in vortex and then do the night dive. See everyone there
