I bought two Mk 17 G250V's last weekend.
I do have to say I am impressed as both of the G250V's have exceptional inhalation performance and I suspect they are maintaining very tight quality control standards.
Adjustment wise I was less impressed as with the adjustment knob all the way out one was adjusted to deliver an inhalation effort of .9" of water and the other was delivering 1.4" of water so there was not much consistency in the sample of 2. 1.0" is about as low as you can go without getting a slight freeflow between breaths and 1.4 is in my opinion a waste of performance. It would be nice for SP to ship them with a much tighter adjustment specification - but hopefully shops will adjust them anyway before they go out the door. It is not hard and requires only a multi-wrench, an in-line adjuster and a magnahelic gauge and you could even train the average counter person to do it in 5 minutes.
I did a side by side comparision with one of my G250's and mixed and matched parts to see what worked with what.
The G250V case is slightly deeper from cover to the end of the exhaust port - maybe 1/8", but the air barrels are 100 percent interchangeable and either work in either case. The G250V case is also inletted slightly on top for a dive/pre-dive label.
The G250V air barrel is about 1/8" longer to accommodate the larger and longer stylized retaining nut and the aspirator hole is a larger oval shape rather than round. It also has the plastic bushing that has been around since the G500 on SP metal air barrels.
The new G250V purge covers fit the old case. The old covers do not really fit the new case that well due to a slightly deeper lip on the new case - I'd like to see one more thread engage - but I don't see many people with a need to put an old cover on a new G250V.
The balance chamber is the current long balance chamber design used or retrofitted on everything with a metal adjustment knob.
The knob portion of the adjustment knob is slightly longer and has a black plastic plug in the end but is otherwise very similar to the splined metal G250 knobs that were used before SP switched to black plastic knobs molded over a metal stem on the later G250's.
The springs look like regular G250V springs despite the difference in part numbers. If there is a difference, it would be in the technical specifications extending beyond just the physical dimensions.
The exhaust valve and diaphragm are a nice late 1980's Scubapro blue silicone color rather than the black that was used on many of the later G250's or the current clear diaphragm and exhaust valve "color".
The orifice is chrome plated brass which is responsible for much of the excellent performance. It is a very welcome change to the crappy plastic orifices SP has stuck us with since about 1995. Yay!! Hopefully they will find their way back into SP's other second stages.
But overall, with a couple minor exceptions, everything interchanges between the two regs and the G250V offers 100% of the performance of the old G250. 1. The old covers do not quite fit the new case, and 2. The longer air barrel will require the longer retaining nut. Conversely, the longer nut will not allow quite enough engagement of the LP hose fitting, so the nuts and air barrels will fit either case but have to be used together.
I have been on occasion finding near new G200's and upgrading them with G250 airbarrels. However when the G250V came out the price of a G250 air barrel doubled. So if I do that in the future, I'll just put G250V airbarrels in them and buy a new retaining nut along with a new G250V adjustment knob and purge cover.
