Ok, sorry about the spellin...OFF OFF OFF eeeekkk I've never had my air turned off! So I'm doin this class and the teacher is goin to shut off the air while we are 15ft in the pool and we are to do an emergeny bouyant acsent with a flare posture.. Now I'm trippin on the Air cut off!! what will it feel like? are my eyes goin to pop out! due to fear of not air? what if I exhaled all my air ...just as he turns it off....Do the teachers tell you when they are about to shut it off? or do the sneek over and turn it off? I LOVE my air!! I hope I don't panic.
huh? thats what the class is about stress and rescue! No panic>
I just want to tow someone on the surface...darn this class....Is this goin to be a scary thing?:shocked2::shocked2::shakehead::confused: Oh, in basic open water..we never had our air cut off..

off is fixed.... and relaxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

if i think back to my OW, which was a long time ago, my instructor waiting until i signaled i was ok to do the skill and he turned off my air. after about 3 breaths you could hear and feel the lack of air in the hose and a signal to my instructor and it was turned back on again.

im pretty sure your instructor will explain clearly what is going to happen and what you should do

cheers

edit: are you doing AOW? i dont remember doing this in advanced. maybe you did the skill in OW and cant remember?

OW we do air off but, instructor lets you know when and is right there with their octo ready to pass off to you if needed.Once you are out of air and signal such air is immediately turned back on it is only to give you a feel of what OOA will feel like, as far as a emergency buoyant ascent??? I also am curious to what class and agency this is for?

Also if you are worried about the instructor shutting off your air do not pay for the class in advance, that way he will be sure to make sure you make it through so you can pay ;-)

I too would like to know what agency you are doing this class with. I'm assuming from your post that it's an Advanced Open Water?

Ladyvalea,

You can expect what the others have said and it will not be an abrupt cut-off.

Remember that you have a 2 stage regulator system. Very high pressure in the cylinder and lower pressure in your second stage hose. Once the air is turned off you still have several breaths left in the hose and you will sense the breathing response fall of. When you sense that don't exhale fully then get what you can on the last breath and execute your ascent.

If you get to dive before this class or at the class as you set up your gear turn the air on, then off and breathe the system down. In 15 feet of water it will fall off a little faster but you will have a perfectly good idea what it will feel like.

I agree that the instructor should brief you on exactly what to do and what to do if you are distressed.

Pete

Good one! :D

Back in '83 we had to do this for Basic Scuba Diver cert.!
We had an instructor that would constantly sneak up behind you (not hard in a pool) and shut off your air. After the first time, it was no big deal. Make sure your instructor knows you're worried so he/she will walk you through it.

If you are 1/4 as jacked up as you wished to convey in this post, whether you're sorry about the spellin of not, you're way in over your head. (glub glub)

Me thinks you're being a bit dramatic.

The truculent tootsie tonsil tickling torpid tunas tries to tease totally terribly. :D

Just do it.
