The new signal, if not just the thumb’s down from those old sword and sandals epics, should be either of these three very useful gestures -- far better than any of that "I'm a little teapot” crap -- from How To Be Italian:

It's because it's non obvious as to what the signal is about.

MANY of the signals we use u/w are not automatically obvious to the people new to diving or who have never seen the signal before. If they were, we wouldn't need to teach them beforehand. Once you teach the signal or show how it works and what it means, it becomes obvious. This specific signal is easy to remember. Intuitively, I would guess it means "my stomach is turning, I am sick" but with explanation, it just means sick.

Again, this wholesale condemnation is just WAY over the top here, totally unwarranted.

#1 to throw up under water (which can be done with or without a reg), or
#2 to resurface

I myself don't like the thumbs up meaning to go up. I see it and automatically think it means someone is happy about something. Then I have to translate the signal in my head. A finger pointing upward, followed by someone kicking upward, would make more sense to me.

BTW, if people here were really so immature, they'd be giving you an unmistakably clear finger signal. But they aren't. Because we love you.

Part of why I ask is because of past experience off roading. The direction one "ran a circle" meant which way to turn a steering wheel.

In construction crane signals are similar for up/down difference in hand above waist or below waist changing direction of lift/drop.

So, yeah, I question, counterclockwise as DAN illustrates or clockwise as PADI diver demonstrated.

"Thumbs up" in some cultures mean "flipping you the bird." One has to be aware of the potential cultural differences in signals. Same applies to the "V" victory sign. AFAIK, in the UK the "V" sign means different thing depending on which way the fingers are place, front or back.

A palm down hand rolling back and forth (like what she does in the video), that's a sign about things being sketchy or uncertain.

Exactly. Here are existing signals from the WRSTC common hand signals standard.

There really is no need for an illness signal in addition to these combined with either pointing out the problem area or a command to stop or ascend.

Two fingers up with palm inwards as an "up yours" gesture apparently derived from the endless wars with the French who would cut off the index and middle fingers of captured archers. The gesture was to shove two fingers up the French.

Little's changed in the succeeding few hundred years. Literally the symbol for Brexit.

Winston Churchill used the palm-out two fingers up gesture as V for Victory in WW2.

Do wonder if the tech diving gestures for counting 1 to 5 were adapted to palm out because of this British gesture symbolism.
