Thumb up and OK are mandatory response signs.

A response is mandatory. But an automatic response of OK to an OK defeats the purpose. If something isn't OK, now is the time to tell your buddy.

Thumbs up should normally result in a thumbs up response. But sometimes the buddy can't ascend immediately: reverse squeeze, entanglement, deco obligation, etc. Again, communicate the problem.

If you don't get a response to your thumbs up or ok, don't get mad and bail. Find out what's going on with your buddy.

I think of this signal as "go that way (direction of index pointed finger) ....

We always use "knife hands" to indicate direction. Hand open, all fingers pointing in the direction of travel.

Pointing with a single finger is used to indicate something of interest, as in "look at the shark"
