Two fingers up with palm inwards as an "up yours" gesture apparently derived from the endless wars with the French who would cut off the index and middle fingers of captured archers. The gesture was to shove two fingers up the French.

Little's changed in the succeeding few hundred years. Literally the symbol for Brexit.

Winston Churchill used the palm-out two fingers up gesture as V for Victory in WW2. ✌️

Do wonder if the tech diving gestures for counting 1 to 5 were adapted to palm out because of this British gesture symbolism.

Made famous by Steve McQueen in his iconic movie “Le Mans”.

I don't like the new signal. but it's mostly because it is new and almost no one currently certified would know what you were signaling if you were to use it. I always taught students to give the "something's wrong" sign and then point to the affected area. I think this is an attempt to give more information that that.

And in many cases, more information may be important. In my years of diving and mostly in my years on ScubaBoard, I know of cases in which divers signaled that they were ending the dive early and then ascended alone, leaving the others to continue the dive. In the cases I am talking about, the ascending diver was found to have died during the ascent or on the surface, or the body was never found at all.

I think that if a diver chooses to end the dive early, a buddy should ascend with him or her, and it is more likely to happen if the diver indicates that he or she is ending the diver because of not feeling well. By far the most common reason for dive fatalities is related to medical conditions, usually involving the heart. It would be nice to have somebody nearby when things really go bad.

There's no reason for a diver with an issue to ascend alone. They signal "problem", point to themselves, signal buddy up, and then thumbs up.

In terms of miscommunication underwater, I think this particular case is low on the priority list. I'd rather agencies focus on the ten issues (particularly the first 2) of the changes DAN would like to see as stated in their 2016 report.

EDIT: as I was asked about it via PM, here's the 2016 report attached. See page five:
Ten Most Wanted Improvements in Scuba
Correct Weighting
Greater Buoyancy Control

More Attention to Gas Planning
Better Ascent Rate Control
Increased Use of Checklists
Fewer Equalizing Injuries
Improved Cardiovascular Health in Divers
Diving More Often (or more pre-trip Refresher Training)
Greater Attention to Diving Within Limits
Fewer Equipment Issues / Improved Maintenance

EDIT2: I rewatched the video and this to me is "the whole enchilada" signal :p

The top one is what I and all my diving friends have been using for at least 30 years. No need for another one that seems very strange.

Every course. You can thumb a dive for any reason. I may never dive with you again, but we will end the dive.

There's no reason for this. If you're ill, you should either remain on the boat/land or get back on the boat/land 👍
And again, could you please show me in any OW course, from the OW course sylyyylbus where these hand signals are taught? And in Australia, the outstreched thumb with the outstreched pinkey is considered: "Hang Loose," or "Relax."

Point being, show me from the OW course where any student can "thumb" a dive. Where is that taught in any OW course? I need documents, not opinions or clips from the internet or magazines.

Always thought some-thing-wrong was holding a fist with thumb and little finger outstretched and waggling the hand 🤙

Why does this need a new hand signal to confuse everyone?

Worse still, your rotating signalling hand could catch on your snorkel and knock your mask off...
I thought that this means that you are telling me you are cool and we should go surfing later. I get this one from incoming divers from other groups sometimes, mostly on holidays 😂

More seriously I thought, like some people posted previously, that you’d use a problem/not ok signal and then a thumbs up

Don't like the new circle signal either. Could be interpreted as "let's circle (dive) around"
