The common hand signals (OK, not OK, up, down, turn around, I'm cold, ear hurts) seem to be the same in all parts of the world in which I've dived. The ones that always seem to differ are stop (flat hand vs fist), question (little finger vs crooked first finger), go that way *use of thumb vs first finger to point), what is your gas pressure (two fingers tapping SPG or palm versus holding up the SPG), indicating pressure (many different ways), Fish species are another highly variable sign, except for moray eel, octopus, shark, and frogfish. Seahorse is a crooked first finger vs a riding horse motion. My favorite is the sign for a hamlet, where the diver holds lout his hand like he is holding a skull in front of him and looking at it.

My favorite is teh dign for a hamlet, where teh diver holds lout his hand like he is holding a skull in front of him and looking at it.
This is a hilarious sign 😂

Simple fact many have died, when help was just few feet away. In some incident reports, including some from Roatan, indicated the deceased was viewed and was motioning.
Care to provide evidence of this? Specifically which report and which page states this?
This is the point that, again, you all are ignoring. Because everyone of you who has advocated inaction, part of problem.
We are not ignoring anything.
Over 80+ woldwide training agencies with reciprociaol agreements, most of these training have differing hand signal section, not including many independent books, but yet world wide no standardization, makes training agencies joke.
I have taught for PADI (largest agency), SSI (second largest agency), and SDI (not sure 4th?). All the same hand signals.

Here something for some of you: NetAddiction Reason why, you all sure don't actually dive anymore, self evedent. In additon, there is Debbi Snow, wonder if "student" was ignored as she decended and gave thumbs up signal? So muchfor thumb dive.
Wait, are you saying that Linnea Mills because her thumbs up signal was ignored?

Hammerhead is the one I always show non-divers. Someday I hope to be able to use it for real.

You suggesting that this new signal would have resulted in a different outcome for Linnea is so out of line and disgusting. Obvious that you have no goddamn idea what you are talking about and don't have the slightest understanding of what happened.
If you had any decency at all you'd remove this from the post.
As someone who has been in touch with her family and her mom especially, this pisses me off to no end.
And you also hide behind a fake name and limit who can see who you are. Another reason to not take anything you say seriously.

in a stress situation you need to keep everything simple to avoid confusion- if anyone gives the somethings not right signal -you watch them like a hawk and be ready for anything

OK, where is the logical connection between hand signals not being harmonized across all diving agencies and one diving agency coming up with an additional redundant and useless hand signal?

Also, isn't the pre-dive briefing the moment where you harmonize hand signals within the dive team?

What kind of hand signals? One handed or two handed? What's the number 6?

What's the sign for the number of angels dancing on a pinhead?

Probably quite a bit. But I never said anything about abandoning existing materials. I said it hasn’t been incorporated into existing materials, specifically online based ones where minor revisions and additions are easy to do (as opposed to books).

For example, the Apple iStore says the PADI app has been updated 25 times in the last two years. Hand signals are a tab with a simple list of signals and a picture, nothing more. Granted, a large chuck of updates where bug improvements, but many said revisions and/or enhancements.

It would seem that adding one more entry to the list, along with a single picture, would be something that would be tasked in one of those updates, if it’s something they are implementing?

Thank you for the feedback, I appreciate it. To be clear, I wasn’t trying to bash PADI, except was one comment that on review I should not have said. I will do better to think about what I say in the future.

Otherwise, I was trying to direct my comments on the signal itself, why I thought it was unnecessary, and signs that appears that PADI did not implement it. The latter not to bash PADI at all, but merely to suggest they had potentially changed their mind on implementing the signal. The perhaps unstated intention of bringing up this possibility was to further support my argument that the signal was redundant, unnecessary, and not a great use of limited instructional time.

Thank you for comments

AGAIN, are about 200 agencies, organizations, federations, clubs, etc teach scuba worldwide, all have various hand signals

Now point forgotten is large number of books, popular books also "teach" scuba

No standardization in books either So many say concern standadized, when not!

When you understand why confusion then some here can have respectable conversation, till then no standardization, not possible to have common ground, understand this fact

From another context, but quite applicable:
Obvious that you have no goddamn idea what you are talking about
Your incoherent, ungrammatical posts do not help you communicate.
