Personally I think the divers who frequent Cozumel should speak up. BY numbers they are less than the cruise ship people but contribute MUCH more to the economy and I know that the new Mayor is aware of that. So shout it out!

Dave, on the theme of the political loss of the PRI do you know which candidate the taxi union backed for Mayor? I am hoping the wrong one. I also understand that all political appointees and patronage jobs in both the municipal and state governments will be up for grabs on September 30th. I expect a lot of upheaval.

How much money per year do divers contribute to the economy of Cozumel verses revenue from non-diving visitors, including cruise ship passengers? I dive Coz, love it, and hope they don't build another cruise ship pier, but I would like to know the revenue statistics. Thanks

Yes, the taxi union is and always has been PRI. That is what makes these results so amazing. But the new reality is that there are a lot more people here that are not tied to the taxistas. I really don't know that there is available any statistic about who spends what in Cozumel but it is certain that one who stays in hotels, eats in restaurants, and pays for diving for a week at a time, on a per person basis, spends a whole lot more than the average cruise ship person who just clogs the streets.

Of course the big cruise ship company or tour operators can pay much bigger bribes than Aldora or others in the dive industry here…but the smart and honest people of Cozumel understand. That is just my opinion.

Thanks for the update Dave. Please keep the information about this coming as it becomes available.

Good news hopefully. I'd really hate to see the serenity of the northern zone interrupted by 1000's of cruise shippers.

Agree. I can certainly state my opinion about events in Cozumel. I have stayed at Villa Aldora. It is a great place to stay and having cruise ships docked abeam Villa Aldora would be ruinous for that facility and others nearby.

On the other hand the Villa would make a great "Gentleman"s Club"!

I would be much happier to forgo extra income…But maybe the liability?
