If you don't follow Mexican politics you may not know that the recent election resulted in some very surprising results. The PRI (old time dinosaurs) lost both the Governors office of the State of Quintana Roo but also The President (Mayor) of the island to the more conservative party PAN.

It is the consensus of us on the island that "deals" made with previous administrations will be blocked and that the proposed cruise ship pier will face big problems. The new Mayor is a Mayan Lady of an old Cozumel family who knows we don't need more cruise ships.

Pretty Good News, Si?

For those that don't know Perla is of the family that owns the restaurant La Perlita. She is now the President of the island.

As a tourist I don't feel I have any right to tell the locals how to live on THEIR island & this sounds a bit like they may want a better "ear" listening to their ideas. Hopefully things will be what's good for the island rather than what's good at making a few politicians wealthy.

It's a little like visiting someone in their home and telling them how they should rearrange their furniture, innit? :D

So, should I take tit hat some of you thought the proposed pier was a good idea for Cozumel itself?

Dave

In my case NO, but then again I don't know the full story, but whether I like it or not it's not for me to judge what the locals think it may do for them, in a positive or negative way. My real concern about any huge change is whether it came about because it was wanted (by the locals) or because a politician or 2 became rich suddenly so it would happen. I don't always like things which go on here where I live but I accept what the majority approve knowing it's been done (usually) in an honest & transparent way.

i think a better analogy would be a business wanting to increase its revenue. Good business sense would suggest they would welcome input from their existing clientele.

Not at all, at least in my case. It's more that we are frequently discussing ways that Cozumel could be run better than it is, and most of us aren't residents.

Yep, just like my neighbor might listen to my suggestion of where I think their piano would be better placed, but they will do what suits them, not me. I am there visiting but they have to live with the arrangement.
