i use a neoprene "wrap pad" made by akona. it completely covers all of the silicone on the strap. after using it once, it was like going from walking barefoot to wearing shoes. the comfort is great. AND it makes my big old high volume mask with a wide lens POSITIVE BUOYANT! i lost it in chop and could see it like a bobber. yesterday i took my fiance' to a PADI discover scuba pool session and it was her first time in gear. she was comfortable until her mask strap ripped against her ponytail. so i gave her mine......i ended up buying her one needless to say. now she is hooked and going OW.
