Last I had heard of Mr. McAfee, he was on AC complaining about being the target of a police raid on his property near Orange Walk. According to him, he had tried to steer clear of local politics and the raid was in retaliation for his refusal to back a certain unnamed politician.
This was in an article in the local Placencia paper last June.
I can sympathize with his complaint. The police here have been doing raids quite frequently. Apparently anyone can "tip" them off about ....anyone, and they will raid your place.
Last year Oct at 5 AM I heard some vehicles pull in my driveway...mind you we live in a guarded farm with a gate and guards....and then BAM BAM BAM !!!! n my door. I open it thinking it was some of the farm guys telling me something was wrong and there were 5 fully armed soldiers. They tell me to get down on the floor and shoved a warrant in my face....which I couldn't read without my glasses. Then they proceeded to search EVERYTHING in my house as my wife and 2 year old son, Jake, Tino and Mo watched in disbelief. I've never even had a traffic ticket in Belize and now I'm a drug and arms dealer suspect????
I was downright pissed and rude and looking back, I'm lucky I didn't get a rifle butt in the face. They told me I had a bad attitude and I told them, "WHAT !! I'm supposed to serve up some coffee and donuts for you busting in my house !!??
It really sucked. Belize is becoming a police state in that you're guilty until proven innocent.
My kids had found some live 20 gauge shotgun rounds on the farm a week before and brought them home. We shoot birds on the farm that eat shrimp. Lucky my wife found them and threw them in the trash. If the police had found them in my house, ALL ADULTS in the house would have been taken straight to prison in Hattiville, no questions asked until your bail or trial. Never mind that there was no fire arm. It really sucks. Someone could plant something in your car like that and tip off the police.
