The originator of the famous anti virus program was recently arrested for the murder of another foreigner on Ambergris Caye. I can't say if San Pedro is safe or not safe. I have spent a total of almost 4 months there over a period of years. What I learned from a series of trips to the West End of Roatan is do not try and get to know the local expatriates. As the saying goes, in the Caribbean they are either wanted, or unwanted.

There are lots of dumb things I could do in my own home town, but at least I know what they are. When traveling a place can seem idyllic and safe yet turn out to not be. This isn't the first bad story to come out of San Pedro and it is no where near as horrific as some of the incidents the Bay Islands have seen.

I would go back there, just to be clear, and I do know a lot of the unwanted.

Didn't this guy go off the deep end last year sometime, too? At one point, I remember reading something in Wired about him being held up with guns and ammo to the point no one wanted to approach his "fortress" for fear of becoming target practice. I think he's wanted for more than just murder now. The guy has some serious issues.

I read over the two stories. Looks like he is still on the run, or did I miss his arrest? Looking over the stories, it sounds like he's had a drug problem, run ins with authorities, associating with "the most notorious gangsters in Belize," etc.

On Sunday, the 11th of November 2012, at 8:00am acting upon information received, San Pedro Police visited 5¾ miles North of San Pedro Town. There they saw the motionless body of 52 year old U.S National, Gregory Viant FAULL, of the said address, lying face up in a pool of blood. He had an apparent gunshot wound on the upper rear part of his head. Initial investigations revealed that on the said date, at 7:20am, Laura TUN, 39 year old Belizean Housekeeper of Boca Del Rio Area - San Pedro Town, went to the house of Mr. FAULL to do her daily chores when she saw him laying inside of the hall motionless. FAULL was last seen alive around 10:00pm on the 10th of November 2012. No signs of forced entry was seen and (1) laptop computer and (1) I-Phone was noted to be missing. The body was found in the hall of the upper flat of the house. A single Luger brand 9mm expended shell was found at the first stairs leading up to the upper flat of the building. The body of Gregory Viant FAULL was taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital Morgue where it awaits a Post Mortem Examination. Police have not established a motive so far but are following several leads.

Last I had heard of Mr. McAfee, he was on AC complaining about being the target of a police raid on his property near Orange Walk. According to him, he had tried to steer clear of local politics and the raid was in retaliation for his refusal to back a certain unnamed politician.

This was in an article in the local Placencia paper last June.

According to one of the articles, he was heavily into synthetic drugs (bath salts) and someone he knew actually fled the country out of fear. When the cops came he hid in hole in the ground with a box over his head.

He is generally regarded as quite wacky. And now rather dangerous. The police will have lots of help in finding him.

"Bath Salts" will do that. There was a recent case where some guy ate another person's face off. There are numerous instances of nearly unstoppable rage and violence.

Nasty s***. I can't even imagine what the sales pitch would be for it:

"Psst! Wanna try something cool? You might like it! Or it might turn you into an unstoppable killing machine and end your life in a hail of paranoia and flying lead."

Yeah, sign me right up.

What the hell are people thinking? How bad to things have to get before these drugs sound like an improvement?
