While recently completing my rescue diver OW scenarios, I noticed that my reg was breathing harder than normal, i.e. I had to suck harder to get a good lung-full of air. To test, I switched to my octo and noticed that it breathed easier. Could this just be that my reg is up for it's first yearly service in about 2 months and needs a good overhaul?

Thanks,
Nick

Considering that your other second stage breathed fine that pretty well isolates the problem to the primary. Most likely, it is in need of a rebuild.

Abyss regs are extremely durable. One of my best friends is very hard on gear. If he has been diving in fresh water, then rinsing his gear is pretty much out of the question. His choice of regs is the Abyss due to it being able to take such abuse.

My Abyss had no service for 3 or 4 years and works perfect. So your second stage seems to have a problem ---> good shop

While an annual service (rebuild) should restore the easy breathing you are used to, a simple adjustment of the cracking pressure would probably achieve the same result at a lower cost.

I have a dive coming up next weekend- how do I adjust the cracking pressure?

Thanks for the responses guys!

I suggest you take it to your local shop and let him tweak it. It's a 5 minute job if you know what you are doing.
