Thanks, Robert! I am sitting here bitting my tongue.
So much for that.
Most of you that have known me for a long time, know my opinion on this subject. After working with numerous Instructors, and DMing on two boats, I have seen so much, as far as, "cattle gate" type training. I have seen it in all levels of divers. OW, Advanced, Master, DM, Assist Instructor, and Instructor. I have even seen it with IT's, Master Instructors, and Course Directors, but we won't go there.
The Dive Community needs to step back and regroup. There needs to be a number of changes installed within teaching standards being used by most today. The solution to this problem is extensive, and is in a number of areas. Retraining of Instructors( to break the rut syndrome), Qualification checkouts for perspective students (to make sure they are ready to go to the next level), and a Pass or Fail mentality adopted into training classes( to help students go on with training or to get more training), are just a couple. There is so much more involved with this subject. I am totally against running people thru training, as many as possible, as quick as possible, to make as much money as possible. Keep in mind this does not include everyone out there. There are a few instructors that enjoy teaching, and truly want to make a change in the quality of training, in students, so, they are providing good informative, competent, and thorough training. Wake up Dive Industry!!!
Stay calm, think, and dive safe,
Rick
