Excerpting from: Auesee - Wikipedia
Auesee is an artificial bathing lake in Wesel, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, about 50 kilometres (31 mi) northwest from the state capital of Düsseldorf. A popular recreation spot, it has been referred to as the "jewel" of Wesel.[1] Auesee was built from one of the largest gravel excavation sites in North Rhine-Westphalia.[2]

Man drowns in front of his wife

Wesel (NRW) – A man (60) from Haltern in Auesee near Wesel drowned on Friday afternoon, apparently in front of his wife (58) .

A tragic diving accident...

At around 3:30 p.m. on Friday, the couple from Haltern first bought tickets and then went to the divers' entrance with their diving equipment. After putting on their gear, they both went into the water.

The woman ducked and noticed that her husband was not following her. So she reappeared to check on him. She noticed her husband was unresponsive and called for help.

A police officer who happened to be present in his free time and two paramedics from the DLRG, who were on the beach area of Lake Aue with a lifeboat, came to the rescue. They immediately began resuscitation measures, which an alarmed emergency doctor continued. Unfortunately without success, the man died on the spot.

The police began investigating the cause of death. They revealed that the man from Haltern died of medical reasons. According to the police, both third-party fault and faults in the diving equipment can be ruled out.

More likely he died of cardiac arrest and just so happened to be on the surface before a scuba dive.
Or from hauling & donning gear and maybe a shore entry. Who knows?

Contrary to most agency recommendations, there are a lot of unfit divers out there...I wonder if he was one of them?
