We had an awesome time at the last one. I am thinking of beer, potluck, and of course lots of diving in the quarry. Last one had inpromptu drysuit classes as well.

Comments anyone?

Darn, can't make this one either. I'll be in Detroit for the Ryder Cup. You would need to be going somewhere like Chuuk or Bikini for me to switch for that one. Its a once in a lifetime kinda thing for us golfers ya know. ;) Go USA!

I am thinking of a trip to Key Largo again early this December for some wreck & reef diving. Plan on diving with Divers City and doing wrecks like the Duane, Bibb, Speigel Grove, etc. Maybe something like the Northern Light if we get the right mix of people.

Any interest?

...... & given my birthday is on the 16th I'll expect a spectacular bday toast! ;)

Paula

Count me in as a definite maybe, kinda/sorta. And my birthday is the 18th. But forget the toast.. I like english muffins with my breakfast. (you do serve b'day folks breakfast in their tent right?)

Yikes, Mine is the 14th..gonna hit 39. Only one year away from the dreaded 40. That's three of us that will be celebrating a B-day at the GLWC get together. This will the the last B-day that I will offically acknowledge. Looking forward to the get together & dive.

Cheers

Guess that means I can have 2 more acknowledged birthdays... I'm turning 38.

Don turns 60 on the 19th! Don't think he is going to be able to come down to Gilboa this time, he has a big golf weekend up in Cadillac! I'm going to try to come down for the day!

Why does it have to be at Gilboa? That place has become prohibitively expensive, especially for families. I just returned from there with my non-diving wife and non-diving dog... Arrived 6:30pm Saturday, made a night dive. Spent the night in a tent. The next day I got 2 airfills and made 2 more dives. What did that cost? $86! 3 dives in that hole cost about as much as 3 Great Lakes wreck dives off a chartered boat. And I saw EVERYTHING (on the shallow end) in 2 dives, the 3rd dive was boring.

Unless you NEED to do deep quarry dives, there's no reason to go there. This weekend cost me more than double what it would have at Whitestar or at Portage. I'd like to camp with you guys at another meet & greet, but Gilboa is a little too rich for me.

I took my non diving wife with me and they charge her full diver price. I wanted to park where the actual water was and not walk a mile and they charged me a nights camping even though they new I wasn't camping. Just so I could park back there. I would like to have another meet and greet but I'm bored with quarry diving and really bored with the over inflated cost. I know now someone is going to pipe up about liability cost and the cost of maintanance, and being it is in the north the season is short. Blah blah blah but I'm not buying into it anymore. I think I will pass on the meet and Greet this time around. We can have it at a State park in Lexington and charter gary from rec n tec for the weekend and still be further ahead.

Gary could use the business. Let me check the calendar for options here. For me the other quarries are not much cheaper as I am paid up for the year at Gilboa. It it $8.00 per night to be right next to the water and whatever my nitrox fills come out to. I agree that I have seen most of the shallow side this year. I would like to spend more time on the deep side as most of my wreck diving is deeper than what you see on the shallow side except by the tubes.

For that matter, we could pick another location that people could charter through. The problem with charters is that most of them only have boat space for ten or less. I anticipate more than ten divers showing up. Another charter option would be Alpena or the Straits. Lots of camping available and operators with large boats. Maybe we should have a GLWC meeting at the Black Forest brewery in a couple of weekends to discuss it. :eyebrow:

Brian, for a single guy, sure the other quarries aren't a whole lot cheaper. But for those of us who want to bring our non-diving families to the meet & greet, possibly for 3 days, Gilboa is just not doable. Gilboa is the most family un-friendly scuba park in the region, period. Mike's prices are high this year to begin with, and he is the only one around here charging non-divers and pets about as much for admission as divers. And he charges each person to camp instead of a flat rate per campsite (so does Portage, but Mike charges double what Portage does, and to top it off he charged $20 for the **** dog!). At Whitestar it's $10 for the whole campsite, and only the diver has to pay $10/day for admission, so the family can come along for free. Portage charges per person but they are still affordable. So when it costs me $30 to camp for one night & dive at the other quarries vs. $86 for the same thing at Gilboa, yes the other quarries are much cheaper. Two nights at Gilboa is out of the question for me. Those campgrounds near Lake Huron may be worth looking at, also.

Families ought to be welcome at the meet & greet, and Gilboa is the wrong place to have it at, IMHO.

P.S. I like the Black Forest Brewery. Any excuse to go there is a good excuse.
