Add a calculation for nitrox and the price gets even more out of hand. Just complaining a little because I really need another one but think they are overpriced. But then again, I think most items today are overpriced.

What do you want? Free? I've seen them priced, new, anywhere from $235 on up. For a basic Nitrox computer, $250- $300 is not unreasonable. If nothing else, look for a used one, that can be had for less. It pretty much boils down to, you get what you pay for. But then like aquaregia mentioned, you can use a depth gauge & watch & do tables.

Free would be cool. But really, maybe I shoud explain a little more. I like the hockey puck style computers, like the Veo, Resourse, React, ect. There are alot of dive computers with that same case; it has probably been around a decade or so. I like the design because you can wear it on your wrist, put in into a console, your pocket, let someone easily borrow it, change batteries yourself in 10 seconds, and buy the battery just about anywhere. I personnaly think the design has been around so long that it should be had for about $100.

Unfortunately, the electronics within them has changed. I haven't paid more than $100 for any of my dive computers, but that's because I'm not interested in buying new.

Yeah I know, but the electronics are the cheap part. And I know I can find a used one for about $100.00, but the problem with that is I think a used one is worth about $25. I am sitting here right now holding my React Pro and don't see a hundred dollar bil. I might do like you and give this one to her, look for my depth gauge, and dive the tables. I always punch in my plan in PADI's little erdp and have a watch on anyway.

It is know-how that is not cheap. Someone has to design and program them. Since this is not a high volume business prices are high. If you would buy in bulk I am sure you could get a dive computer at half (or less) of the price you are paying now. Just buy 10,000 of them.

If you think they are expensive now, I would certainly not recommend you travel back in time to the 1980s. Just in case you were considering it.

EDIT: Screw the flippant jokes, I am calling BS on the OP. I bought my first dive computer (air only) two years ago for about $175. I bought one for my Dad this year (Nitrox compatible) for $250. You can't get a quality watch for much less than that. And the makers of quality watches don't have to worry about R&D or some idiot suing them for getting bent.

I think most Scuba gear is over priced. I usually buy used. Look at Scuba Toys. Some times they have used computers with a year warranty.
