While some may disagree, I love my computer and all the things it does. It does things I may or may never want to use it for. But I like gadgets. I don't mind paying for it. I get enjoyment out of it. If it costs too much for somebody else that is their opinion and they are entitled to it. Me...I think it's fun!

I think they're a bargain. As a free-enterpriser myself, I am immediately drawn to the "what the market will bear" and "economies of scale" arguments cited above. As one would expect, as the number of users has increased, prices have dropped. These hockey-puck VEOs and similar, at less than $200 new (probably less than I spent on my Dacor MicroBrain in ~1985, in 1985 dollars!), seem like a real bargain to me. I remember spending SGD1,000 (~$700) on a US Divers Monitor II (or maybe III) in 1995, with transmitter, deeply discounted by a shop in Lucky Plaza. I had to have it for my trip to Truk, even though it transmitted tank data sporadically, at best.

Well if you believe that lots of things are overpriced then it stands to reason you are more likely to think that dive computers are also overpriced.

There are a large number of competitors in both the watch market and the dive computer market. Economic theory suggests that if they really were overpriced, one of them would trim their margins and increase sales at the expense of the rest (particularly during a period of economic decline).

You mean like Edge/Hog has done so in the regulator market. Maybe Ceric will market a computer too!!!

Or, like Patek Phillippe watches, they may price it so high that the price itself becomes an attraction to acquiring the item.

Ultimately the market sets the price. If you and the rest of the market don't like the price it will either go down or the product will cease to be produced. If you and the rest of the market really like it the price will go up until more producers get into the market and then it will go down again.

However, if you just don't like spending more than necessary on a dive computer...I agree. Necessary may be more than $100 however for a new computer:)

Now that I own a computer or two or three... I think that prices are too low. They should all jack up prices to three times the price so I can sell two of them at a decent profit while used.

Weldon,

I am a person that complains about prices also. I try not too because no one wants to hear it. But then, I grew up in a time when new cars were $1800, postage stamps were 6 cents, and my pay rate was 56 cents per hour.

15 years ago I completely relied on my dive computer for depth, nitrogen loading, and duration of off gassing. Since then I have done enough diving that now days I can accurately estimate (I am a recreational diver) these items. So now I am looking at my dive computer and asking myself what do I need this high priced thing for?

And the answer is: Some establishments insist on seeing certain gear (computers, snorkels, safety sausages, to name a few) on divers.

I am rambling so I will stop here

So you're nostalgic for the days when you could buy a new car with 3214 hours of wages, or about 80 weeks? Guess what, that effort will get you a brand new BMW 740i sedan, with change, at today's average hourly wage of $22.75

all i can say to the op is - don't get into tech. the computer prices are fierce!
