If I recall correctly on the Oriskany, they sent down a sidescan sonar a few hours later but actual divers went down first thing next morning. I don't know if that was to let things settle or due to surface conditions or low daylight or what.
 
When the Oriskany went down in 2006 MBT Divers website had over 5 million hits in 24 hours.

You were there an d will remember best, what was the post sink schedule as far as diver inspections and public access?

The first dives on Oriskany were conducted about 5pm on the sink day by the crew that was on standby to pick up any debris that came up. We dove her the next morning to recover the cameras that were on board. Oriskany opened to the public 48 hours after sinking.
