Most manufacturers now have slick coated wetsuits. You aren't forced to stick with goldcore.
I don't like zippers so I bought a 5 mm suit from Omer for my last trip, the team thermo titanium model (just their name for the plastic coating, no Ti in it). It worked very well for 27 dives and the seams are fine. Most of these suits are rather soft neoprene so they may compress a little bit more at depth. I get cold fairly easily and if I had to do it over I'd have bought a 7 mm thickness.

Note the coating slides on so well you just pull the top on like a tight sweatshirt. Much warmer without a zipper to leak water or possibly break. Picasso makes good suits in this style as well, they call their coating BioTermic.
