My local dive shop that carries Halcyon does not carry much of the gear in the shop. They can order it, but are not keen at all on doing returns, even on unused gear.

EE on the other hand, let me use the gear for a month and was very willing, and friendly, about returning used gear for a full refund. I looked at this as a "try before you buy" deal, as they state on their website. My LDS would have laughed if I asked about doing this.

To be honest, when first looking at gear, and knowing virtually nothing, I asked about a Halcyon rig at the LDS and the guy went into the full price/spiel of a technical get up with double steels/manifold/55 lb. wings etc. EE was very helpful with all of my beginner questions. They are also cheaper than what my LDS charges for the Halcyon gear they do sell.

I personally think Halcyon has a huge untapped market in the newbie dive business where some serious bucks are to be made, but unfortunately the marketing or something is not there.

When you talk about prices being brutal, yes, I can get a Henderson .5 suit on L Pro for $80 I think, at the shop is 110. I bought a Henderson 5mm suit at the shop for 370 or so with tax, and at L Pro could have had it for 250 plus 5 or so for shipping.

The reg set I have, that I bought in the dive shop was about twice what it is on Dive Inn.

My take is that if I use a dive shop's expertise I will always buy from them. If I do not then I go online for the most part.

Woo Hoo...I ordered my Halcyon rig today from EE since I sold my Ranger last night. The guy I spoke with on the phone talked me into buying the STA. He said in his opinion the tank was more stable to use the STA than just going with the delrin rods in the wing. Is anyone else using an STA with the new style Pioneer wings? What do you think of it, does it offer more stability?

Did for me - but I've since heard that maybe the new cam straps were a bit stretchy when soaked, which may have caused some tank slippage problems I was having (even after wetting the straps before putting them on the tank). But now I just unbolt the STA from the wing when I want to take the tank in for a fill, and I don't have to undo the cam straps at all unless using rental tanks. Most of my diving is shore based, so getting fills between dives is the usual MO.

Well...that's what I was affraid of but I figured I'd give it a try. He said I could try it and compare and if I didn't like it or feel it was necessary I could return it for a refund so what the heck.

I bought a couple tank keepers, (Zeagle, but and long ones would work), threaded the "new" cam bands thru, and presto:
Tank is extreemly secure and the bolt heads (wing) dont scratch up the tanks anymore. (adds about 1/4 inch offset)
I'll attach a picture tonight.

Thanks Tony, I'd like to see that, I'm not quite clear what you're talking about but the picture should help. I don't know, the STA seems to me like it might make the tank a little less prone to wobble since it has the U-shaped channels to go up against the tank tight but I don't know, I've never tried an STA. If it has no advantages I'll just send it back then.

I have the 36lb Pioneer without an STA. As long as I soak the tank bands 30 seconds or so and tighten them fully, I have had no problems with tank instability.

OTOH, with my old backplate which had an STA, I would have to tighten the wingnuts every few dives, or they'd loosen enough for the tank to wobble.

YMMV.

Never knew anything else. Though I do have a STA, I've never tried it on the Pioneer.
