I have been to Gilboa a couple of times. What is the diff between Gilboa and Portage? Not that I do not like Gilboa but sometimes a little change could be fun.

The difference between Gilboa and Portage are:

Gilboa has:
  • Mike, you get to figure out if that's a good thing or a bad thing.
  • Good to bad parking depending on when you get there.
  • Deep diving
  • More things to see
  • Attack trout
  • Those damn stairs back up to the parking area. Gravity sucks, litterally.
  • I think the mosquitos at Gilboa are a bit more ferocious too, but that's only my opinion.
Portage has:
  • Shorter form to sign in with
  • Generally better parking
  • Volley ball and other things to do.
  • Better restrooms near the diving.
  • Thick bottom muck, so it silts up real easy. Not that any of the quaries is that much better.

I was trying hard to think of good things to say about either place, then I say the first reply. Pretty much sums it up. Sure, hop on over to Portage and explore.

I almost miss those trout........

Nah ;)

Doesn't hurt to try them all and draw your own conclusions. Don't forget to try Whitestar also.

...and in fairness... they have slightly different characteristics depending on the time of the week or the season, so you may want to try them a couple of times each.

But I would accentuate the "DEEP diving" opportunities at Gilboa.
If you are just practicing, either seems to fit the bill. Then it's a matter of "what's closer?"

Is the parking closer to the dive entry points than gilboa? We wer thinking of going there saturday morning, anyone else gonna be there?

Coin Toss... if you park near the stairs at Gilboa, it's a snap. Or parking near the entrance at Portage. It's about the same Portage vs Gilboa distance wise, sans the stairs at Gilboa, but IMHO they aren't that big a deal.

I don't really mind the stairs that much normally. There are a few times however:
  • The wood bending under the weight of all that gear is a bit scarey at times. Okay, before one of my 'buddies' chimes in they bend a bit without all the gear too.
  • I do worry about slipping on the stairs and the dock, it gets very slippery.
Shame Mike can't just let it fill up a bit more. Before you say anything I realize that's probably the natural level and it wouldn't go up much higher if he tried.

I've been to gilboa a few times and think we are going to try portage out saturday morning. It is closer to the inlaws house. Thanks for the info.

If you are "trying out quarries" in the area, you might also want to check out White Star. I have found the vis there to be supurb. Only major down side is there isn't always fills available- some guys brings a portable "fill station" when it is busy.
