I'm sorry, you lost me . . . of which spool of which ROV are you writing? 2000' in a 5" by 5" spool?

No. only about 300', it is about the same diameter as 200 pound mono leader. PBS aired a NOVA recently that showed one of the first ROV's with the pay out fiber-optic cable. They were using it to get interior Titanic video. (I think they called it "Rusty", MIT is currently working on a smaller, more powerful version called "Jaws 2".

Hopefully the family will get some answers tomorrow and the guys will all be safe and successful!

I must be a bad person; frankly - To H*** with the family, I hope everyone gets out safe. Period. This all sounds like a circus.

Yep....clowns have turned it into one for sure!

Underwater camera will be used at Vortex Springs Saturday

PONCE DE LEON — A special underwater camera has arrived from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office to be used in the next search for a missing diver at Vortex Springs in Holmes County. The camera and operators will begin the search for Ben McDaniel at about 10 a.m. Saturday according to the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office.

Capt. Harry Hamilton of the HCSO said the VideoRay camera would operate on the end of a 2,000-foot tether that contains the camera cable. The camera would be controlled from shore by a control box and includes a television screen.

Law enforcement and search and rescueorganizations use VideoRay ROV as an underwater search tool, according to the VideoRay web site. "The VideoRay has been proven in drowning victim location and recovery operations, underwater crime scene investigations and evidence recovery," according to the website.

More information on VideoRay cameras can be found at www.videoray.com.

McDaniel, 30, from just outside of Memphis, TN, was reported missing on Aug. 27 after not being seen for two days at the well-known diving site in western Holmes County.

Last Monday specially trained “cadaver dogs” were deployed at Vortex Springs early Monday morning and the dogs indicated the presence of decomposing material. The source of the decomposition appears to be underwater.

The Tennessee native is believed to have attempted to work his way past a narrow restriction about 1,500 linear feet inside the cave at Vortex Springs. There are reports McDaniel was attempting to map the cave that is the scene of other diving accidents over the years.

Well, at least that thing looks small enough to go in tight places...
