Has anyone considered catching and dissecting a few of the eels for forensic analysis of thier stomach contents?

Why should those eels have to suffer?

Seriously though I like me some bbq eel sushi, so maybe that's not all that bad of an idea (assuming there is no "long pig" found in them).

Can the eels burrow under sand?

Not sure, but they made it there from the Atlantic Ocean, so I'm assuming they're expert cavers at worst.

Hmm...This might work (after the ROV thing fails).

Dogs have detected decomp compounds coming from the water. A series of water samples taken from say...300,600,900,1200, etc, then tested for those chemicals (the dogs can do it, probably) would show that the body (if there is one) is inside of x feet.

The test could be repeated from the next highest sample site to 3-400ft in front of it, giving the searchers a narrow band to search. All water samples would need to be taken across the cave (maybe 3 stations depending on cave width) to capture a wide enough cross section.

This entire procedure could probably be done within a handful of dives. Is that a realistic thing, or am I armchair quarterbacking?

Its good thinking. However as I have posted several times Edd took samples at different intervals in the caveand gave them to the local law. Last time I was there they had not been checked, my guess is they probably still have not. Its not as elaborate as your idea, which seems logical if any water sample returned positive.

yeah those were spools of thin copper they spun off REAL fast. wasn't optical signal

leave a damn mess all over the test ranges.

Right . . . and a guy convinced the Ft Hood Garrison to pay him a fortune to clean up the Army's ranges. . . Imagine how stupid we looked when he was selling the copper and doubling what the contract paid him . . .

The spool weighs about 3 lbs, and is about 5" wide and 5" in diameter. This cable is sacrificed when entangled, and must be reattached tho the ROV. It is not meant as a means of retreiving the ROV. The fiberoptic cable is only a data streaming device for putgoing control input, and video output. Power supplied by onboard battery. Once again, I am not advocating the use of this type of ROV in this exercise in futility, I am just presenting a peice of technology that people seem to be wondering about.

I'm sorry, you lost me . . . of which spool of which ROV are you writing? 2000' in a 5" by 5" spool?
