Questions:
Do you carry dive insurance?
What kind and why?
Do you cover your gear as well?
If you have dive insurance do you purchase trip insurance as well?

Just so many options out there and I want to make sure I'm covered...

Thanks,

New Diver Dave

I have the DAN preferred insurance (dive accidents, recompression etc.)

Depending the cost of the trip I get trip insurance from a regular trip insurance company.

I am still researching gear insurance.

Dave...thanks for your questions. I'm new to diving myself and have been looking for the same answers.

dan insurance, most dive ops now require you to have dive insurance, but it's a good idea to have it anyway.

gear insurance is another good idea to carry. i don't worry about trip insurance, probably should though.

If you do get into trouble on a dive from their boat they probably don't want any hemming and hawing about seeking costly care.

Do dive boat waivers give them authority to seek care on your behalf assuming you don't have a responsible next of kin by your side?

Good thread, we have our first dive trip in 2 months.

To the OP,
Yes we got DAN coverage the day we certified.
Yes we bought trip insurance.

I too am looking at gear coverage. If you are a homeowner start by investigating any existing coverage. Pay attention to covered losses like: theft from home or vehicle, whil in public transit? while on a baot? while in use. There can be gaps. Also look at max $$ allowed.

I carry DAN preferred plan insurance. At $99/year ($29/year DAN membership and $70/year insurance premium), I think it is a good deal. Just in case something happens...helicopters, ambulances, and recompression are all expensive.

Dive Insurance is a necessary evil.
DAN (Divers Alert Network).. because in my opinion it's the most bang for the buck.
Gear - No reason to cover gear if you can afford new gear.
Trip - Only if the trip costs $5,000 or more

Dive insurance is a good idea, but why would the dive op care whether you had it or not and how is it (even remotely) any of their business?

Many operators won't let you on their boat without it! As with anything else... What the Captain says - is the way things is. No C-Card, No Insurance, No Diving. It is their business because they're the ones making contacts and arrangements to get your sorry non-knowing how to dive rear-end back to civilization in something other than a body bag... and if it is going to be a body bag... DAN insurance covers all of that too!

I have PADI Platinum dive insurance. I includes some trip insurance and gear insurance. Also have my gear insured through my house insurance. IMHO DAN has way to many problems going on right now for me to consider their insurance.
