I forgot one other detail: can a transmitter be fitted to either of these 1st stages? I know it gets tight for some 1st stages and sometimes an interconnect is provided.

I have the Subgear Cayman which is the same as the MK17 and I have a transmitter mounted directly (no short hose) with no problems at all. The transmitter points to my right shoulder and I wear the computer on my right wrist.

Here is a thread discussing the Subgear Cayman if interested: Sub gear!?.

Yes, you can mount a transmitter to either first stage. The Mk17 does come with an extender which works well for Transmitters.

If you are using Scubapro's or Suunto's transmitter and you do not want to use the short extender then it will be a snug fit with the hoses. It is recommended you remove the LP hoses, put the transmitter on the first stage, then reattach the LP hoses. It is fairly easy to do.
