John, I thought you knew!?!

Cookies came standard with last years Halloweens cave diving costume. Rumor has it this year it will be line arrows. Fortunately, faux cave divers won't know the difference and probably won't need them either until they start including the kite reels with plastic snaps.

;)

Looking like a cave diver seemed to be more important to them than actually being one. So what do cave divers carry? Cookies and arrows. I have some myself. Still in the plastic baggies for sale. :D. But seriously I have considered using them in exercises with students on some low vis nav classes. I mean they are running reels and would be nice for the team behind to know they are following the right line. But then realized pieces of pvc are bigger and easier to write on with heavy gloves. Has anyone ever seen them used on a wreck? I have not to this point but see where they could be useful for exploration purposes by multiple teams.

In the meantime I can tie them on a string and old fishing rod and have a dandy glow in the dark toy to aggravate the cats with.

I have been trying to ascertain exactly what certifications the father actually had. I keep looking at the reports, and I see vague references to him being OW certified only, but the wording is never precise. It could just mean he did not have any technical or cave certification. Nitrox is not considered an advanced certification any more. You can even use nitrox on your 4th OW certification dive these days, and you can get nitrox certification the next day. From what I have read, it is possible he did have nitrox certification.

Does anyone have any reliable information saying he did not have nitrox certification?

Should be possible for the various instructors to run his name through their various agencies and see what certs pop up...

I am aware that nitrox is not advanced, but so far as I know it's uncommon to find a shop that will fill nitrox without a C-Card.

Unfortunately you have applied your personal experience too broadly. They would have had no problem getting any gas they wanted with very little creativity required.

Never in my life have I ever been asked for a C-card at a dive shop. Tanks, regs, fills...never. I'm sure there are shops and facilities that will ask, but I have never been asked.

As far as I can remember I always have to show my card without any exception whatsoever. From Maldives all the way to PNG and Australia.

Your experience is not universal.

I don't recall ever being asked for a card to get fills in Florida cave country, either for air or nitrox. On the other hand, in Chicago I've had to show a card for both at every shop I've visited. It's been hit or miss in other locales.

Only card I've ever been asked for in a dive shop for anything is a Visa or Mastercard.

Ditto. They also love my Discover card, (and so does my wife)...
