Search continues for missing man in Lake Travis

The Travis County Sheriff’s Office is searching for a man in his 20s after he went missing near Lake Travis Saturday evening.

At 5:57 p.m., A 911 caller reported that a family member went to the lake to do some diving and never returned home.

Austin-Travis County EMS, Lake Travis Fire Rescue, Travis County Parks, TCSO and Travis County ESD 1 responded to the scene at Mansfield Dam Park.

Crews searched the water on boats and used underwater search equipment. They used a thermal drone to search on the shorelines and surrounding area. Despite their efforts, they were unable to find the missing man.

The team assembled again Sunday morning to continue the search. TCSO said they will conduct area, shoreline and sonar searches.

I've dove there before. It's generally a fairly easy area to dive. Visibility isn't great, but often fine compared to the rest of the lake. I guess if you try to swim into the locks/gates/etc that can be dangerous, but I think they made that hard to do accidentally.

I wonder if he was scuba diving or freediving...

Link doesn't work?
I suppose it fails if viewed from there. Here ya go...

Body of Missing Diver Recovered from Lake Travis

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: December 13, 2022
Body of Missing Diver Recovered from Lake Travis
At 5:57 pm on December 10, 2022, TCSO Lake Patrol Deputies and other agencies responded to a 911 report that a male in his 20s had gone to Lake Travis to do some scuba diving and hadn’t returned home. Search efforts were conducted until 8:30 pm and suspended due to darkness.
TCSO Lake Patrol Deputies began area, shoreline and sonar searches at daybreak Sunday, December 11th. TCSO was assisted by LCRA and TX Parks & Wildlife. Recovery efforts were suspended at nightfall. Early Monday morning, December 12th, deputies resumed searching using sonar and a remotely operated underwater camera system. They were again assisted by LCRA and TX Parks & Wildlife.
Search efforts resumed this morning and TCSO was assisted by TX Parks & Wildlife and APD’s Lake Patrol Unit. At approximately 12:30 pm, the body of the missing diver was located at a depth of 60 feet. He was recovered at approximately 1:30 pm.
Out of respect for the family involved, and because this is not a criminal incident, TCSO will not disclose the identity of the decedent via press release.

At least they found him. Nothing useful in the article from an accident analysis perspective. Solo-diving and OOA would be my first wild guess based on the lack of info.

An OOA is too easy to survive from 60 feet. But nope, we'll never know.

Aren't there legends of huge catfish at the Mansfield Dam?
We dove Travis a few times and viz was terrible, that was when the lake was low and many years ago.
Sad to hear about a young life cut so short, condolences to the family.
