it was a 10 day trip i got sick on day 3 or 4 - fortunately there where 2 doctors on board - you MUST have a doctors certificate to legitimise your claim- I also had a letter for the LOB organisers to verify my invoice for the trip to pro rata the cost.
One friend got injured on a trip and he had a zoom call with his local GP

Thanks for the info. I've been on a couple of liveaboard trips where this would have come in handy for me. I'm not sure that there were any doctors aboard though, so might not have mattered.

Going to be taking a 2 week trip to Costa Rica in December, this was a good reminder to go ahead and get DAN insurance before I forget.

I'm still torn on the need for additional dive insurance above and beyond the DAN membership alone. The membership gives me coverage for emergency transport for care and repatriation back to the US for additional care if needed. I understand that it does NOT give me secondary medical expense benefits, but if my primary insurance covers emergency and urgent care out of country with doable out of pocket maximums, I'm not sure that I need the medical expense benefits. What is the case for additional insurance in this scenario?

The add on from Dan is just like a standard travel insurance the covers your luggage etc

Ok, that's what I thought. I'm willing to risk lost luggage. One interesting bit I found in the fine print of the DAN membership details is that the emergency medical transport and travel assistance benefits are NOT covered if the accident is related to any pre-existing condition OR snow skiing (which is what I'm often doing if not diving!). That makes it a lot less valuable for me. I think i'll investigate something that is more focused on overseas medical supplemental coverage, hopefully without those restrictions.

Just some quick info. Others may go into more detail.

1. Being a DAN member ALLOWS you to purchase DAN DIVE insurance - a membership does not include dive insurance.

2. There is a DAN DIVE insurance plan (I believe Guardian and Preferred plans) that does include non-dive related accidents. The cheaper plan ONLY covers dive-related accidents. The higher plans also cover DIVING trip cancellation and interruption to the extent that the pre-paid expenses for the trip were related to diving.

3. DAN is a secondary insurance that pays after other insurances cover what they will.

4. DAN TRAVEL insurance is separate from the membership and DIVE insurance. There are also different levels for this insurance again covering pre-paid expenses. If I were getting this insurance (at my age and being on Medicare), it would be for the medical.

From what I've read through the years from others, DAN plans can vary from state to state, so best to do a little research.

* Most of the time when I travel and plan to dive, I have the DAN dive insurance and get the Allianz trip insurance offered when I purchase my air fare - it's cheap but gives me some medical.
I've tried searching and can't find a straight answer. Does DAN dive insurance cover you in the USA, if you are a USA resident? Or it only covers you, if you travel outside your home country? If DAN will not cover you within the USA in this situation, and you want dive accident coverage within the USA, what is the next best option? Dive Assure? Does Dive Assure cover US residents within the USA? Thank you in advance.
