Hey everyone! Have a week long liveaboard next year leaving out of Port Ghalib. We were thinking of spending 3 days or so in Egypt before the trip to be less jet lagged for diving. We had initially thought we’d sightsee in/around Cairo, but hanging out in Marsa Alam also looks appealing. Anyone with advice or experience on this? Thanks!

My wife and I lived in Switzerland for 2 years, 2014-2016. We did a 2 week + trip to Cairo, Luxor to Aswan and Abu Simbel in 2016. That was a fantastic trip. I did 2 weeks of liveaboard out of Port Ghalib later in 2016. I went down a little early and went diving with a land-based operation. That was a fantastic trip also. I have fond memories of the time in Egypt.

Best of luck for your trip

Cairo itself is busy, noisy, and dirty. But there's a lot to see in Islamic architecture.
Across the river are the Pyramids which are a lifetime event.
Navigating the streets of Cairo is a constant hassle, but the rewards are substantial if you have an interest in the history, art, and culture.

The pyramids and the museum are worth seeing but Cairo itself, I found unpleasant. Regardless, definitely worth the time to visit the historical sites and the museum.

After. Long flight the main thing will be for you to get over jet lag and get used to the time zone and possibly the temperature. Between May and September or October Cairo will be boiling hot. The day diving from Port Ghalib is nice enough, Emperor are an excellent outfit. We stayed in the Palace Hotel which is beautiful and within walking distance of the day boats and the marina that LOBs leave from.

I dove Huraghada a couple times way back. Over the years I have logged so many dives but I only saw the pyramids once. I have never regretted seeing the pyramids or the sphynx. Its a world wonder. My only regret was I didn't go the the museum.

Yes Cairo is hot a dusty but its also CAIRO. YOLO experience as much as you can!

Dinner on the Nile on a river cruise
