I was on the spectre yesterday (sat). The Spectre & the Explorer headed straight for Santa Cruz and didn't even bother trying Anacapa because it was probably blown out on Friday. It took us quite a while to find sites that weren't surgy and we probably made it half way up Santa Cruz by the end of the day. It was cool to see Santa Cruz cause I hadn't dove there before. Good day altogether.

Jen and I hit Vet's late this afternoon (6pm). Hardly any surf, and vis was a very diveable 8'. Had a great 70 minute dive.

How were other sites this weekend?

Jaye and I were at Vets around noon - flatness. Several divers. Water looked pretty clean.

Went to ML for lunch... not pretty. The point was surge that was washing half-way up to the trail at times. I'm not kidding. I walked about half-way down to look at the high tide (1:35) and a blaster came out of nowhere that kinda scared me. Then another one - then back to relative calm. Not a good day to try to enter from the point.

Cobble Beach would have been no problem to get in and out of, but the water was turquoise soup. Would have been terrible viz. Glad we were tourists and not divers today.

I plan on taking the express from Dana Pt. and diving Casino Pt. Saturday. I'll let you know how it goes. Wish me luck.

We left Dana Point on the 7:45 express and with the exception of a few large swells just outside of the DP harbor the ride was smooth and fast.

We made three dives at Casino Point. The first two had vis in the 25' to 30' range.

On both of the first two dives we ran in two Giant Black Sea Bass!:yelclap::yelclap::yelclap: I'd been waiting for over 20 years to experience diving with the GBSB!! What an incredible adventure. We were able to follow them for about five minutes. I even got a short video clip with my new digital camera.

On the third dive the current was ripping. Almost Cozumel speed. The kelp was laying over flat and the vis was down to 10' to 15'. It was difficult making any head way into the current. There was a lot of commotion on the stairs with divers trying to get in and out with the swell.

All in all, a great day of diving with great friends and the GBSB too.

The seas were almost flat in San Diego. A few swells and the accompanying surge, but no current and not lumpy surface interval. Viz 15-20 on the Yukon and Ruby E Saturday, 10-15 in the Kelp Beds Sunday. Nice and warm until you hit the thermo-clime, then a bit chilly at 54. If the viz had been better would have been a great 2 days of diving.

Mike, I'm glad the high surf did not ruin your dives.
BTW is 54 really that chilly? ;)

Actually a south swell (like this one) can affect the leeward coast of Catalina. I heard there was a strong swell one day as well as good current running.

I think I had much better conditions in Wreck Alley than I might have had at Casino Point. The seas were pretty calm (2-3 ft swell?) although the surge below was enough to make good filming nearly impossible. Enjoyed the Ruby E and the two dives on the Yukon. I'm glad I dove the NOSC Tower, but I doubt it will be on my "return to dive" list.
